Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Depending on the system chosen, a mayor may be the chief executive officer of the municipal government, may simply chair a multi-member governing body with little or no independent power, or may play a solely ceremonial role. A mayor's duties and responsibilities may be to appoint and oversee municipal managers and employees, provide basic governmental services to constituents, and execute the laws and ordinances passed by a municipal governing body (or mandated by a state, territorial or national governing body). Jos Van Kemenade
Josephus Antonius van Kemenade (6 March 1937 – 19 February 2020) was a Dutch politician of the Labour Party (PvdA) and sociologist. He was granted the honorary title of Minister of State on 5 April 2002. Life and career Van Kemenade was born in Amsterdam. He attended a Gymnasium in Amsterdam from June 1949 until 1955 and applied at the Radboud University Nijmegen in June 1955 majoring in Sociology and obtaining a Bachelor of Social Science degree in June 1957 and worked as a student researcher before graduating with a Master of Social Science degree in May 1960. Van Kemenade worked as a researcher at the Radboud University Nijmegen from May 1960 until January 1965 and was director of the Institute for Social Sciences from 1 January 1965 until 11 May 1973. Jeroen Dijsselbloem
Jeroen René Victor Anton Dijsselbloem (; born 29 March 1966) is a Dutch politician and economist serving as Mayor of Eindhoven since 13 September 2022, succeeding John Jorritsma (VVD). A member of the Labour Party (PvdA), he has also been Chairman of the supervisory board of Wageningen University since 1 April 2019. Dijsselbloem was Minister of Finance in the Second Rutte cabinet, serving from 5 November 2012 to 26 October 2017. He also served as President of the Eurogroup from 21 January 2013 to 12 January 2018 and President of the Board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) from 11 February 2013 until 12 January 2018. He was successively Chairman of the Dutch Safety Board from 1 May 2019 to September 2022. Johannes Arnoldus "John" Jorritsma (born 16 September 1956) is a Dutch politician serving as Mayor of Eindhoven from 13 September 2016 to 13 September 2022, and succeeded by Jeroen Dijsselbloem ( PvdA). A member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), he previously was the King's Commissioner of the province of Friesland between 16 May 2008 and 12 September 2016. Rob Van Gijzel
Rob van Gijzel (born 29 June 1954 in Eindhoven) is a Dutch politician. He is a former MP and was mayor of Eindhoven between 8 April 2008 and 13 September 2016. When Van Gijzel was a student, he became an active member of the Jonge Socialisten. He served as that organization's chairman in the period 1979-1982. He was a candidate for parliament for the PvdA and was finally elected to parliament for that party in 1989, where he served as caucus spokesman on the subject of Verkeer & Waterstaat (traffic, transport, public works and water management). Following the Bijlmer disaster he picked up the nickname ''Bijlmerboy'', due to his vociferous insistence on a full parliamentary inquiry into the aftereffects of the crash. Christian Democratic Appeal
The Christian Democratic Appeal ( nl, Christen-Democratisch Appèl, ; CDA) is a Christian-democratic political party in the Netherlands. It was originally formed in 1977 from a confederation of the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party and the Christian Historical Union; it has participated in all but three cabinets since it became a unitary party. Health Minister Hugo de Jonge served as Leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal from July 2020 until his resignation the following December. Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra was then chosen as ''lijstrekker'' for the 2021 general election, becoming the ''de facto'' party leader. Gerardus Johannes Maria "Gerrit" Braks (23 May 1933 – 12 July 2017) was a Dutch politician of the defunct Catholic People's Party (KVP) and later the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and agronomist. Braks applied at the Wageningen Agricultural College in June 1959 majoring in Agronomy and obtaining an Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree in July 1961 before graduating with a Master of Science in Engineering degree in July 1965. Braks worked as a agronomist and agricultural engineer in Eindhoven from January 1966 until April 1970 and as a civil servant for the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission from April 1970 until June 1977. Alexander Sakkers
Alexander Boudewijn Sakkers (Delft, 28 May 1948) is a former politician from the Netherlands. He is a former member of the gedeputeerde staten of Groningen, mayor of Heerlen and mayor of Eindhoven. Sakkers grew up in Arnhem. Originally he was employed as an airforce officer, however after his study in geography, he chose a career in education. Till 1993 he was rector (head of daily ongoings) of the secondary school community in Ter Apel. Sakkers is a member of the liberal party, the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Rein Welschen
Reinier Wilhelmus "Rein" Welschen (29 August 1941 – 17 September 2013) was a Dutch politician and member of the Labour Party (PvdA). Welschen served as an alderman of Breda from 1978 to 1987. He was a Provincial-Executive of North Brabant from 1987 to 1992. He served as the Mayor of Eindhoven from 1992 until 2003. The city experienced the bankruptcy of both the DAF Car BV and the Operation Centurion at Philips during his tenure, which increased unemployment. A major crash of a Belgian Air Force C-130 Hercules also took place on 15 July 1996. In 2004 he was acting mayor of Westland. Rein Welschen had been in declining health for several years.
