Maynard Shipley
Maynard Shipley (December 1, 1872 – June 18, 1934) was an American Freethought, freethinker and Science journalism, science writer. Biography Shipley was born in Baltimore and was educated at Stanford University, California. He lectured on science and founded the Academy of Science in Seattle, 1898. He defended evolution and campaigned against creationism and religious fundamentalism. He founded the Science League of America in 1924 of which he was President. The League was known for its advocacy of separation of church and state and protecting the freedom of science education. Shipley was married to Miriam Allen deFord. He was an active member of the Socialist Party of America but resigned in 1922. Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. A critic is a person who communicates an assessment and an opinion of various forms of creative works such as art, literature, music, cinema, theater, fashion, architecture, and food. Critics may also take as their subject social or government policy. Critical judgments, whether derived from critical thinking or not, weigh up a range of factors, including an assessment of the extent to which the item under review achieves its purpose and its creator's intention and a knowledge of its context. They may also include a positive or negative personal response. American Atheists is a non-profit organization in the United States dedicated to defending the civil liberties of atheists and advocating complete separation of church and state. It provides speakers for colleges, universities, clubs, and the news media. It also publishes books and ''American Atheist Magazine''. The organization was founded in 1963 by Madalyn Murray O'Hair. She had earlier filed a lawsuit against her school board, with her son William J. Murray as plaintiff, to challenge compulsory prayer and Bible-reading in public schools. Her case, ''Murray v.
