Mayilamma
Mayilamma (10 August 1937 – 6 January 2007) was an Indian social activist whose claim to fame was the campaign against Coca-Cola Company in Plachimada in Palakkad, Kerala. She belonged to a native tribal community. She was the recipient of the Speak Out award by ''Outlook'' magazine and the Sthree Shakthi Award. She is also known as the 'Plachimada Heroine'. Early life She was born on 10 August 1937 in the village Muthalamada, on the border of Palakkad. When she turned 15 years old, her father Raman and mother Kurumanda married her off to Mari Muthu from Plachimada. She came to live with him in Plachimada after her wedding. The couple had four children. Mari muthu died before she stepped into the terrain of grassroots activism. Plachimada Coca-Cola Struggle
The Plachimada Coca-Cola struggle was a series of protests to close the Coca-Cola factory in the village of Plachimada, Palakkad District, Kerala in the early 2000s. Villagers noted that soon after the factory opened, their wells started to run dry and the available water turned contaminated and toxic. Soon, waste from the factory was passed off to farmers in the area as fertiliser. The controversy became "one of the most studied corporate controversies" in recent times. History of Plachimada Plant HCCB’s Plachimada plant was launched and became operational in 2000. The 34.64 acres of HCCB factory produced beverages Limca, Fanta, Thums Up, Sprite, Kinley and Maaza etc. Over 400 local residents were provided direct employment. The factory was closed from 2004 to May 2021 following local agitations. Malayali People
The Malayali people () (also spelt Malayalee and also known by the demonym Keralite) are a Dravidian ethnolinguistic group originating from the present-day state of Kerala in India, occupying its southwestern Malabar coast. They are predominantly native speakers of the Malayalam language, one of the six Classical languages in India. The state of Kerala was created in 1956 through the States Reorganisation Act. Prior to that, since the 1800s existed the Kingdom of Cochin, the Kingdom of Travancore, Malabar District, and South Canara of the British India. C Saratchandran
C. Saratchandran (1958–2010) (Sarat) was an Indian documentary filmmaker, based in Kerala, India. He was also a documentary activist, who managed to conduct hundreds of film screenings of documentaries and film classics in remote towns and villages in Kerala Saratchandran was born on 16 February 1958. His parents are Chandrasekharan Nair and T. Sarada. His maternal grandfather was Professor M. P. Manmathan, a well-known Gandhian and orator. He has two sisters, Neeraja Rajendran and Sarada Sunanda. Early life Saratchandran studied at Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram. As a student activist he participated in protests against the repression and human rights violations during the Internal Emergency (1975–1977) declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Satyagraha ( sa, सत्याग्रह; ''satya'': "truth", ''āgraha'': "insistence" or "holding firmly to"), or "holding firmly to truth",' or "truth force", is a particular form of nonviolent resistance or civil resistance.
