Mayaro County
Mayaro is the name of a county on southeastern Trinidad island, in Trinidad and Tobago. History The "Mayaro District" was the first area of settlement on the east coast. Many estates were granted to French planters who settled Trinidad in the late 18th century. No roads crossed the island and the area was only accessible by steamer until the late 19th century. Geography The name Mayaro is applied to several villages along the coast. The county of Mayaro occupies a large area of southeastern Trinidad, but the name is usually only applied to the coastal strip. County Mayaro is divided into two wards: Trinity and Guayaguayare. Along this strip a number of villages exist to which the name Mayaro is generally applied. Trinidad and Tobago (, ), officially the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is the southernmost island country in the Caribbean. Michael Anthony (born 10 February 1930) is a Caribbean author and historian, who was named one of the "50 most influential people in Trinidad and Tobago". Early life and education Born in the county of Mayaro, Trinidad, on 10 February 1930, to Nathaniel Anthony and Eva Jones Lazarus, Michael Anthony was educated on the island at Mayaro Roman Catholic School and Junior Technical College in San Fernando. He subsequently took a job as a laundry worker in Pointe-à-Pierre for five years but had ambitions to become a journalist. Later on, poems of his were published by the ''Trinidad Guardian'' in 1954. Yet it was not enough for him to secure a new job locally and Anthony decided to further his career in the United Kingdom. Ortoire River
The Ortoire River is a river in Trinidad and Tobago. It forms the boundary between Nariva County and Mayaro County in east Trinidad. At over in length, it is one of Trinidad's longest rivers and is navigable by very small crafts for at least a third of its length from its mouth at the Atlantic coast near Point Radix and the village of Ortoire. It is green in color and it once had an iron bridge with wooden planks but it has been replaced by an all paved concrete bridge; also it was made higher to reduce flooding. Mayaro Bay
Mayaro Bay stretches for nine miles on the east coast of the island of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The beach which lines the bay, Mayaro Beach, is a popular destination for holidays, long weekends, and is one of the traditional places to spend the Easter holidays. Nariva
Nariva is a county in Trinidad and Tobago. It is located in eastern Trinidad, south of Saint Andrew County and north of Mayaro County, to the west by Victoria County and to the northwest by Saint George County. The southern boundary of the county lies along the Ortoire River and the western boundary is Cocos Bay (more commonly referred to as Manzanilla Bay). The towns of Rio Claro and Ecclesville are located in Nariva County. The Nariva Swamp is located in the eastern part of Nariva County. Ortoire (village)
Ortoire is a village in Mayaro County on Trinidad Island. It is named after the adjacent Ortoire River. The village dates to at least the 1880s or a few decades earlier. Ortoire is just west of the peninsula of Point Radix, named after a French immigrant granted an estate there in 1783. The village's beach at the mouth of the river provides shelter to ocean-going fishing boats. The village was not listed in the 1901 census, but was believed to have "a few hundred people" then. Guayaguayare
Guayaguayare is the southeasternmost village in Trinidad & Tobago. It lies at the southern end of the county of Mayaro. Guayaguayare (often simply called ''Guaya'') is primarily a fishing village, but it also plays a major role in the petroleum industry. The largest petroleum producers in the country - BP Trinidad & Tobago (bpTT), BHP and Petrotrin all have major presences here and bpTT controls the Port of Guayaguayare, which services most of the offshore petroleum production in Trinidad.
