Max Ellmer
Max Ellmer (1909 – 1984) was a Swiss tennis player in the years before and after World War 2. Ellmer had a powerful backhand and good footwork. He played Davis Cup for Switzerland from 1933 to 1938. He won the Swiss Championships four times (1932, 1934, 1935 and 1936). He played at the French Championships and Wimbledon in a Grand Slam singles career that spanned the years 1930 to 1949. At the French Championships in 1934, Ellmer beat the 13th seed Wilmer Hines and won a set from eventual winner Gottfried von Cramm in losing in the fourth round. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Gottfried Von Cramm
Gottfried Alexander Maximilian Walter Kurt Freiherr von Cramm (; 7 July 1909 – 8 November 1976) was a German tennis champion who won the French Open twice and reached the final of a Grand Slam on five other occasions. He was ranked number 2 in the world in 1934 and 1936, and number 1 in the world in 1937. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1977, an organisation which considers that he is "most remembered for a gallant effort in defeat against Don Budge in the 1937 Interzone Final at Wimbledon". Von Cramm had difficulties with the Nazi regime, which attempted to exploit his appearance and skill as a symbol of Aryan supremacy, but he refused to identify with Nazism. Subsequently he was persecuted as a homosexual by the German government and was jailed briefly in 1938. Dragutin Mitić
Dragutin Mitić ( sh-Cyrl, Драгутин Митић, ; 16 September 1917 – 27 August 1986) was a tennis player from Yugoslavia. He defected to the West in 1952 and afterwards lived in the United States. Early life and family Dragutin Mitić was born in Zagreb on 16 September 1917. He was nicknamed ''Dragec''. His first tennis performance was an instant success. In 1932 he played at the national junior championships and won. At eighteen, he competed in Bled and upset Czechoslovakian Josef Caska with a 13:11, 6:1 score, and brought home the mixed doubles with Hella Kovač. He made his Davis Cup debut in 1936. That same year he traveled to South Africa and, although he didn't return with any major result, gained international experience. For 74 years he was the last Briton to reach the final of the men's singles at Wimbledon, until Andy Murray did so in 2012.
