Max Borges-del Junco
Maximiliano de la Luz Borges y del Junco (May 29, 1890 in Jaruco, Cuba - June 9, 1963, Arlington, VA) was a well-known Cuban architect and Minister of Public Works during the presidency of Dr. Federico Laredo Brú of Cuba. He graduated as an engineer in 1916 and as an architect (in 1917). His first company was “Construcciones Max Borges” later renamed “Max Borges e Hijos”. Jaruco
Jaruco is a municipality and town in the Mayabeque Province of Cuba. Geography The town is located in the east of Havana, between San José de las Lajas and Santa Cruz del Norte. The municipality borders with Habana del Este (municipal borough of Havana), Santa Cruz del Norte, Madruga and San José de las Lajas. Federico Laredo Brú
Federico Laredo Brú (April 23, 1875, Remedios, Las Villas, Cuba – July 7, 1946, Havana, Cuba) was an attorney and served as President of Cuba from 1936 to 1940. He was married to Leonor Gomez-Montes. Laredo Bru was a Colonel in Cuba’s Liberation Army during the Cuban War of Independence Rise to power Laredo Brú's rise to power began in January 1936 as Vice President. When Miguel Mariano Gómez, son of former president José Miguel Gómez, won the presidential election, strongman Fulgencio Batista engineered the impeachment of Gómez in December 1936 for having vetoed a bill to create rural schools under army control. Max Borges Recio
Max Borges Jr., born Max Borges Recio (July 24, 1918 – January 18, 2009), was a Cuban architect best known for his work in Havana in the 1940s and 1950s. He later moved to the United States. Biography Borges Jr. was born in Cuba, the son of Max Borges del Junco, an architect. He later studied in the United States, earning his bachelor's degree at Georgia Tech and a master's degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Borges Jr. returned to Cuba and joined his father's firm, together with his brother Enrique. Borges' style was influenced by his work with Spanish structural engineer Félix Candela who practiced in Mexico and was a specialist in lightweight concrete parabolic structures. Borges invited Candela to work with him in Cuba, and they both developed extraordinary projects. His best known work is the Tropicana Club of 1951, for which he later designed expansions.
