James Mawdsley (trade Unionist)
James Mawdsley (9 January 1848 – 4 February 1902) was an English trade unionist. Alongside Winston Churchill, he stood as a Conservative Party candidate in the double Oldham by-election of 1899. He was born in Preston, Lancashire, to cotton spinner James Mawdsley and his wife, Jane. From the age of 9, the young James worked in a cotton mill as a "half-timer" (he spent half the working day in the mill and half at school). By the age of 16, he was working full-time. In 1871, Mawdsley married Ann Wright, and they had seven children together. In 1878, he became the General Secretary of the Amalgamated Association of Operative Cotton Spinners. At the time, cotton spinners were considered an elite group by other union factions. Shortly after his appointment he led the operatives in south east Lancashire in a strike against a 20% reduction in wages, securing 5% of this back in early 1880. James Rupert Russell Mawdsley is a traditionalist Catholic priest who before seminary was a prisoner of conscience in Burma. He is a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Australia. Early life Mawdsley was born in 1973. His parents are David and Diana, and he has three siblings. He gave up his study at Bristol University, and while backpacking met Burmese refugees who engaged his interest in the plight of ethnic minorities in Burma. Although subsequently a declaration of nullity was issued, he married his wife, Elizabeth, in January 2005. They honeymooned in Rome, where their union was blessed by Pope John Paul II. Burmese activism and imprisonment Mawdsley took up teaching English at a Burmese refugee camp, and became further involved when government forces burnt down the school. Richard Mawdsley (born 1945) is an American artist known for his work in metalsmithing, particularly narrative sculptures and vessels made of precious metal tubing, cogs, gears, and mechanical components. Early years Richard Mawdsley was born in 1945 at Winfield, Kansas. He attended Emporia State University from 1963 to 1967, majoring in Art under instructors Don Hazelrigg and Ron Hickman. He stumbled upon metalsmithing accidentally as he could not get into a printmaking class and opted to take metals instead. After this introduction, Mawdsley majored in metals and began to make works inspired by Pop art. Upon graduation, he entered the University of Kansas and studied Jewelry and Silversmithing from 1967 to 1969 as a graduate student under the tutelage of Carlyle Smith. Robert John Maudsley (born 26 June 1953) is an English serial killer. Maudsley killed four people, with one of the killings taking place in a psychiatric hospital and two in prison after receiving a life sentence for a murder. Initial reports falsely stated he ate part of the brain of one of the men he killed in prison, which earned him the nickname Hannibal the Cannibal among the British press and "The Brain Eater" amongst other prisoners. However, the Press Complaints Commission records that national newspapers were subsequently advised that the allegations were untrue, according to the autopsy report. Maudsley is the longest-serving British prisoner in solitary confinement.
