Maurice Bruneau
J.-Maurice Bruneau was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was the 16th Mayor of Shawinigan from 1966 to 1970. He was born in 1908 in Saint-Maurice, Mauricie and once owned a butcher shop on 5e rue (Fifth Street). He was a member of the Richelieu Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Bruneau served as a council member from 1957 to 1966. He ran for mayor in Shawinigan in 1966 against incumbent Gérard Dufresne and won. Under his administration, the Centre des Arts (2100, boulevard des Hêtres) was completed. Bruneau ran for re-election in 1970, but was defeated by council member Dominique Grenier. He died in 2004. Shawinigan () is a city located on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie area in Quebec, Canada. It had a population of 49,349 as of the 2016 Canadian census. Shawinigan is also a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Shawinigan. Its geographical code is 36. Shawinigan is the seat of the judicial district of Saint-Maurice. Saint-Maurice is a parish municipality in the Mauricie region of the province of Quebec in Canada. History The hagiotoponym refers to Saint Maurice. The territory of Saint-Maurice was colonized in the early 1830s when the place was still part of the Seigneurie of Saint-Maurice. The Catholic parish was founded in 1837 and detached from the Parish of Cap-de-la-Madeleine. The territory of the original parish was much larger than that which exists today, as it also included the Saint-Louis-de-France neighborhood in Trois-Rivières and a part of the current parish of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel. The parish municipality of Saint-Maurice was officially incorporated in 1855 during the original municipal division of Quebec. In 1858, the village of Fermont splitted from Saint-Maurice but was ultimately re-annexed in 1939 following the closure of the Radnor forges, the only company that supported it, and by the same token the exodus of its entire population. Mauricie () is a traditional and current administrative region of Quebec. La Mauricie National Park is contained within the region, making it a prime tourist location. The region has a land area of 35,860.05 km² (13,845.64 sq mi) and a population of 266,112 residents as of the 2016 Census. Its largest cities are Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan. The word ''Mauricie'' was coined by local priest and historian Albert Tessier and is based on the Saint-Maurice river which runs through the region on a North-South axis. Mauricie administrative region was created on August 20, 1997 from the split of Mauricie–Bois-Francs administrative region into Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec. Gérard Dufresne
F. Gérard Dufresne, (1918 – 27 January 2013 ) was a well-known local politician and a military officer in Shawinigan, Quebec. Born in East Angus, Quebec, Estrie, Eastern Townships in 1918, he got a degree from the Shawinigan Technical Institute and would later make career as an insurance agent. Military Dufresne became a member of the 694 Army Cadet Corps (Collège Immaculée-Conception) in 1933 and then became a reservist with the Régiment de Joliette. During World War II he commanded an infantry company in England and served in the Netherlands, with the Régiment des Fusiliers Mont-Royal and in Germany. After the war, he became the commanding officer of the Shawinigan-based C Company of the Régiment de Joliette. In 1953, Dufresne was promoted lieutenant colonel and served as commander of the 62nd (Shawinigan) Field Artillery Regiment, which he had joined in 1948, until 1960. Dominique Grenier
Dominique Grenier (born 1931) was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was the 17th Mayor of Shawinigan, Quebec from 1970 to 1986. He was born in Shawinigan in 1931. Grenier was a City Councillor from 1969 to 1970. He successfully ran as Mayor of Shawinigan in 1970 against incumbent Maurice Bruneau and was re-elected in 1974, 1978 and 1982. He did not run for re-election in 1986. Grenier's mayorship was served under difficult circumstances. Many local businesses moved out of town or closed down. Under his administration, the Parc de l'Île Melville (then known as Parc des Chutes) was reorganized and expanded. Grenier ran again in 1994, but was overwhelmingly defeated by candidate Lise Landry.
