Maureen McCarthy (author)
Maureen McCarthy (b. 1953) is an Australian author. McCarthy grew up on a farm in Homewood, Victoria, and was initially an art teacher in Victorian secondary schools before moving into film. She partnered with Chris Warner to start Trout Films, and produced films such as Eating Your Heart Out a documentary about eating disorders. She co-wrote In Between, a TV drama series for SBS, before turning it into books. She continued to write for TV series such as Ocean Girl and Lift Off. Her books are focused around young adults, and have been shortlisted for numerous awards. Her novel ''Queen Kat, Carmel and St Jude Get a Life'' was published in 1995 and adapted into TV series for ABC TV. The series was produced by her husband Chris Warner. SBS is a national public television network in Australia. Launched on 24 October 1980, it is the responsibility of SBS's television division, and is available nationally. ''Ocean Girl'' (titled ''Ocean Odyssey'' in the UK) is an Australian science fiction TV series aimed for family audiences and starring Marzena Godecki as the lead character. The show is set in the near future, and focuses on an unusual girl named Neri who lives alone on an island, and the friendships she develops with the inhabitants of an underwater research facility called ORCA (Oceanic Research Centre of Australia) the show is an example of deep ecology science fiction. Lift Off (Australian TV Series)
''Lift Off'' was an Australian children's television series that was developed and produced by Patricia Edgar and broadcast on ABC Television from 1992 until the series ended in 1995. Each episode featured a live action storyline about a group of young children, and the problems they encountered with growing up, their parents, and various other social issues. Episodes would also feature segments of short animation, puppetry and documentary segments, as well as various songs, stories, and word games. Aimed at 3- to 8-year-olds, the series was linked with the school curricula through the Curriculum Corporation of Australia. The different episodes used stories and locations to explore subjects such as jealousy, loneliness and anger. The puppet characters were designed by illustrator Terry Denton and were constructed by the sculptor Ron Mueck. Chicago International Film Festival
The Chicago International Film Festival is an annual film festival held every fall. Founded in 1964 by Michael Kutza, it is the longest-running competitive film festival in North America. Its logo is a stark, black and white close up of the composite eyes of early film actresses Theda Bara, Pola Negri and Mae Murray, set as repeated frames in a strip of film. In 2010, the 46th Chicago International Film Festival presented 150 films from more than 50 countries.
