Matti Makkonen (politician)
Matti Makkonen (16 April 1952 – 26 June 2015) was a Finnish engineer in the field of mobile communications. He was employed (among others) by Nokia Networks and the then Telecom Finland (branded as Tele), as well as Oy. Makkonen played a leading role in creating the mobile communication unit of what is today TeliaSonera. In 2008, Makkonen was awarded ''The Economist'' Innovation Award in the computing and telecommunications category for his work on text messaging (SMS). Ilkka (newspaper)
''Ilkka'' was a Finnish morning newspaper published in Seinäjoki, Finland from 1906 to 2020. History and profile ''Ilkka'' was established in Vaasa in 1906 as an independent newspaper. The name may be a reference to Jaakko Ilkka, a 16th-century rebellion leader in the Cudgel War, but this is unconfirmed. The founders of the paper were Santeri Alkio and his supporters. Later its headquarters in Vaasa was moved to Seinäjoki. ''Ilkka'' was part of the Ilkka Group which also owned '' Pohjalainen''. The publisher was Ilkka-Yhtymä Oyj. ''Ilkka'' later became a supporter of the Centre Party and remained as such until 1997 when it declared its independence. The circulation of ''Ilkka'' was 55,395 copies in 2001. Short Message/Messaging Service, commonly abbreviated as SMS, is a text messaging service component of most telephone, Internet and mobile device systems. Suomussalmi () is a municipality in Finland and is located in the Kainuu region about northeast of Kajaani, the capital of Kainuu and south of Kuusamo. Nordic Mobile Telephone
NMT (''Nordic Mobile Telephony'') is an automatic cellular phone system specified by Nordic telecommunications administrations ( PTTs) and opened for service on 1 October 1981. NMT is based on analogue technology (first generation or 1G) and two variants exist: NMT-450 and NMT-900. The numbers indicate the frequency bands used. NMT-900 was introduced in 1986 and carries more channels than the older NMT-450 network. The NMT specifications were free and open, allowing many companies to produce NMT hardware and pushing prices down. The success of NMT was important to Nokia (then Mobira) and Ericsson.
