Matt Vonk
Matt Vonk (born August 15, 1990) is a professional Canadian football offensive lineman who is currently a free agent. He was most recently a member of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted in the fifth round, 38th overall, by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2013 CFL Draft and signed with the team on May 30, 2013. He played CIS football for the Waterloo Warriors and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Professional career Saskatchewan Roughriders After being drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2013 CFL Draft Vonk was released following training camp and returned to the University of Waterloo to complete his college eligibility. He played wearing a cast as he had broken his hand in a scrimmage early in the season. Waterloo Warriors
The Waterloo Warriors are the athletic teams that represent the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The Warriors have found success over certain spans in football, hockey, rugby, golf and basketball among others, and the Warriors have won national championships in hockey (1974), basketball (1975), and women's swimming (1975). For many years from the 1960s through the 1990s, Warrior basketball games attracted the largest and rowdiest basketball crowds in the country. The Warriors Football teams have won two Yates Cup Championships, in 1997 and in 1999. The team's 2010 season was cancelled after a steroid scandal, the biggest ever in CIS Football history. Waterloo's teams were originally known as the "Mules" after the school's founding in 1957, and for a while the women's teams were the "Mulettes", a name that was almost universally despised and ultimately replaced by "Athenas". CIS Football
U Sports football is the highest level of amateur play of Canadian football and operates under the auspices of U Sports (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport). Twenty-seven teams from Canadian universities are divided into four athletic conferences, drawing from the four regional associations of U Sports: Canada West Universities Athletic Association, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, and Atlantic University Sport. 2014 Saskatchewan Roughriders Season
The 2014 Saskatchewan Roughriders season was the 57th season for the team in the Canadian Football League. The Roughriders qualified for the playoffs for a third straight season, but failed to defend their Grey Cup title as they lost the West Semi-Final to the Edmonton Eskimos. For the second consecutive season, the club held training camp at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon with the main camp beginning on June 1. Offseason Transactions During the offseason, the Roughriders lost many key players from the 2013 season, including Weston Dressler, Kory Sheets, Craig Butler and Ricky Schmitt.
