Matija Gubec
Matija Gubec (, hu, Gubecz Máté) ( 1548 – 15 February 1573), with his real name Ambroz Gubec (or ''Gobec''), was a Croatian / Slovenian (nationality still disputed) revolutionary, best known as the leader of the Croatian–Slovene Peasant Revolt of 1573. He was part of the court of three people that governed the rebels. Biography The name ''Matija'' first appears in the work of the Hungarian historian Miklós Istvánffy in 1622. Probably Istvánffy attributed this name to him after the good King Matija, and later the two, and the peasant king, György Dózsa (leader of the Hungarian peasant revolt in 1514), merged in folk traditions. Before the revolt, Gubec was a serf on the estate of the landowner Ferenc Tahy. When the revolt erupted, the peasants elected him to be one of the leaders, and renowned for his personal qualities, he became the most influential leader of the rebellion. Matija Bećković
Matija Bećković ( sr-cyr, Матија Бећковић, ; born 29 November 1939) is a Serbian poet, writer and academic. Life Bećković was born in Senta, in the multiethnic province of Vojvodina (then Danube Banate, Kingdom of Yugoslavia), to a military family of Montenegrin Serbs. Bećković's father Vuk was an officer in the Royal Yugoslav Army, and during World War II the commander of the Rovci Chetnik Battalion and as such, one of the commanders of the leader of the Montenegrin Chetniks, Pavle Đurišić. His father was killed in 1945. He graduated from the Valjevo Gymnasium in Valjevo in 1958. It was during his gymnasium years in Valjevo that he published his first poem, in the journal 'Mlada Kultura'. Furthermore, it was also in Valjevo that Bećković met Vera Pavladoljska, to whom the poem of the same name, published in 1960, was dedicated. Matija Divković
Matija Divković (1563 – 21 August 1631) was a Bosnian Franciscan and writer. He is considered to be the founder of Bosnia and Herzegovina literature. Life Divković was born in Jelaške near Olovo in the then-Eyalet of Bosnia. He probably joined the Franciscans in the nearest monastery in Olovo and was schooled there. He continued his studies in Italy, but then returned to Bosnia to work there. In 1609 he was a chaplain in Sarajevo. It is plausible that he also performed other duties, since the monasteries of that age usually had schools. It was there that Divković wrote his first work, ''Christian Doctrine for the Slavic People'', and started to translate ''One Hundred Miracles or Signs of the Blessed and Glorious Virgin''. Matija Bravničar
Matija Bravničar (24 February 1897 in Tolmin – 25 November 1977 in Ljubljana) was a Slovenian composer. Bravničar was one of the first Slovenian symphonic composers. He composed four symphonies, two operas, several symphonic poems, chamber music, and other works. He first began studying the violin, and then studied composition with Mario Kogoj and Slavko Osterc at the Ljubljana Conservatory. He was a member of the opera orchestra in Ljubljana, and after the war a professor of composition. As an expressionist composer, his compositions often used elements of Slovenian folk music tradition. In 1963 he received the Prešeren Award for his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. From 1972 until his death he was a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He married the ballet dancer and choreographer Gizela Bravničar in 1932. Matija Babić (born 1978) is a Croatian journalist and entrepreneur best known for being the former editor-in-chief of the Croatian news website Index.hr. Biography As a student of University of Zagreb's Faculty of Political Sciences, Babić began his career in the media in the late 1990s when he launched political news websites Vlast.net and Izbori.net. This caught attention of Globalnet, one of the pioneering Croatian ISPs, who hired him as editor of their web portal Online.hr. Matija Dvorneković (born 1 January 1989) is a Croatian retired footballer. Club career Early career Growing up in Velika Gorica, Dvorneković went through the ranks of the local Radnik, before joining NK Slaven Belupo's top tier U19 team in 2007. His appearances for their youth team landed him a contract in March 2008. Matija Jama
Matija Jama (4 January 1872 – 6 April 1947) was a Slovene painter. Together with Rihard Jakopič, Ivan Grohar and Matej Sternen, he is considered among the best representatives of Impressionism in the Slovene Lands. Life Jama was born in Ljubljana, where he attended primary school and lower grammar school. He then moved with his family to Zagreb, where he began to show an interest in painting when in higher grammar school. After finishing grammar school, he enrolled in the law faculty, but in 1890 he quit his studies and left for Munich, where he enrolled in a private art school. Matija Gogala
Matija Gogala (born December 11, 1937) is a Slovene entomologist, working mainly in the fields of insect bioacoustics, physiology and taxonomy. He studied biology at the University of Ljubljana where he graduated in 1960 and became an assistant at the Department of biology (Biotechnical faculty). He received his doctorate in 1964. Later, he became a docent at the department and began teaching animal physiology. He obtained full professorship in 1981. In the meantime, he worked at the National Institute of Biology in Ljubljana, where he served as a director between 1976 and 1979. Matija Majar, also spelled Majer (7 February 1809 – 31 July 1892), pseudonym Ziljski, was a Carinthian Slovene Roman Catholic priest and political activist, best known as the creator of the idea of a United Slovenia. Biography Majar was born in the small village of Görtschach ( sl, Goriče) east of Hermagor-Pressegger See in the Gail Valley ( sl, Ziljska dolina) in southern Carinthia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He was baptized ''Mathias Maar''. He grew up in a bilingual Slovene-German environment and then attended the lyceum in Klagenfurt and in Graz. Matija Antun Relković
Matija Antun Relković (also Reljković; 6 January 1732 – 22 January 1798) was Habsburg military officer and a Croatian writer. Early life and military career Born in the village of Davor, Croatia, Davor in Kingdom of Slavonia (today a part of Croatia) as a son of a Military Frontier officer, Relković too enlisted in the Austrian army at the age of 16. He fought in the Seven Years' War until he was captured by Prussians in Wrocław (Breslau), and spent a few years of rather "relaxed" imprisonment at Frankfurt (Oder).
