Hywel ap Syr Mathew (died 1581) was a Welsh poet, genealogist and soldier. He originated from Radnorshire in the valley of the River Teme at Llanfair Waterdine. Harriet Mathew
Harriet Mathew was an 18th-century London socialite and patron of the arts, who is considered an important early patron of John Flaxman and William Blake. She was the wife of the Reverend Anthony Stephen Mathew (also known by the pseudonym Henry Mathew). Alexander Gilchrist, in his ''Life of Blake'', writes of her: John Thomas Smith was introduced to Blake by Mrs Mathew and heard him read and sing his poetry on several occasions; it was here that the qualities of his voice and reception of his audience were recorded in his contemporary biographical notes. Smith also notes she was "extremely zealous in promoting the celebrity of Blake" and as responsible, via her husband and his friends, for the printing of his ''Poetical Sketches'' (1783). Gervase Frederick Mathew (11 February 1842 – 10 February 1928) was an English naval officer and entomologist. Gervase Mathew was born in Barnstaple and educated at Barnstaple Grammar School and Blundell's School. He entered the Royal Navy as Assistant Clerk 12 December 1860, was promoted to Assistant Paymaster 15 February 1865, then to Paymaster 9 February 1879 and retired as Paymaster-in-Chief 11 February 1902. One of his early appointments was to the ''Warrior'', the first British ironclad. He was sometime based in the Mediterranean then at Sydney and in Fiji and travelled extensively in the central Pacific. He introduced Edward Meyrick to the fauna of the central Pacific islands. Francis James Mathew, 2nd Earl Landaff KP (20 January 1768 – 12 March 1833), styled The Honourable Francis Mathew from 1783 to 1797 and Viscount Mathew from 1797 to 1806, was an Irish peer and politician. Mathew sat for Tipperary in the Irish House of Commons from 1790 to 1792, when his election was declared invalid. He represented Callan between May and November 1796 and subsequently again Tipperary in the Irish House of Commons until the Act of Union in 1800 and then the United Kingdom House of Commons from 1801 until he succeeded his father in the earldom in 1806. Edward Mathew (1729 – 25 December 1805) began his military career in the British Army as a commissioned officer. By the time of the American Revolutionary War he had risen to the rank of colonel. Promoted to brigadier general, he was assigned to command the elite Brigade of Guards in the American campaign. In 1776 he led the Guards at Battle of Long Island, Long Island, Battle of Kip's Bay, Kip's Bay, and Battle of Fort Washington, Fort Washington where he spearheaded one of the assault forces. In the Philadelphia Campaign, he commanded his brigade at Battle of Brandywine, Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Germantown, Battle of White Marsh, White Marsh, and Battle of Monmouth, Monmouth. Caluadewage Cyril Mathew (30 September 1912 – 17 October 1989) was a United National Party member of parliament, representing the Kelaniya electorate, and served as the Minister of Industry and Scientific Affairs in the Jayewardene cabinet (1977–1986). Mathew who joined the United National Party was appointed its joint general secretary in 1956 and served till 1967, when he resigned after falling out with the party leader Dudley Senanayake. The Sabaragamuwa Province ( si, සබරගමුව පළාත ''Sabaragamuwa Paḷāta'', ta, சபரகமுவ மாகாணம் ''Sabaragamuwa Mākāṇam'') is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. Brian Frederick Mathew MBE, VMH is a British botanist, born in the village of Limpsfield, Surrey, England. His particular area of expertise is bulbous plants, particularly ornamental bulbous plants, although he has contributed to other fields of taxonomy and horticulture. He has authored or co-authored many books on bulbs and bulbous genera which appeal to both botanists and gardeners, as well as specialist monographs on other genera, including ''Daphne'' (with Chris Brickell), ''Lewisia'', and ''Helleborus''.
