Matamoros Cathedral
The Our Lady of Refuge Cathedral (also Matamoros Cathedral; es, Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Refugio) is the main Catholic church in the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is the headquarters of the Diocese of Matamoros. It was built in the 19th century, and is located in the historical center of the city. The work was initiated by Father Nicolás Ballà in the early nineteenth century. The church, with Neoclassical architecture, has three naves. Over the years the cathedral has undergone slight modifications. The façade, also in Neoclassical style, has three access arches flanked by Tuscan columns, six in total. Matamoros, officially known as Heroica Matamoros, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and the municipal seat of the homonymous municipality. It is on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, directly across the border from Brownsville, Texas, United States. Matamoros is the second largest city in the state of Tamaulipas. As of 2016, Matamoros had a population of 520,367. In addition, the Matamoros–Brownsville Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,387,985, making it the 4th largest metropolitan area on the Mexico–US border. Tamaulipas (), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Tamaulipas ( es, Estado Libre y Soberano de Tamaulipas), is a state in the northeast region of Mexico; one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. The Diocese of Matamoros ( la, Dioecesis Matamorensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in the northeast part of the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, along the border with Texas. The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Monterrey. History Antecedents When the first Catholic missionaries, de Silva and Puellea, arrived in 1793, this region was under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Diocese of Linares. Padre Ballà (ca. 1770–1829), also known as José Nicolás BallÃ, was a rancher, a priest, and an original grantee of Padre Island, which was named after him. However, when he owned the island, it was known as the ''Isla de Santiago'' land grant. Padre Island had been granted to his grandfather, Nicolás Ballà in 1759, by King Charles III of Spain, and Padre Ballà requested a clear title to the property in 1827. His mother Rosa MarÃa Hinojosa de Ballà had made a joint application with Padre for eleven leagues of the island, but when reapplication was required in 1800, she withdrew her name in favor of him.
