MasterCard Championship
The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour Champions in Hawaii, on the Big Island. It is played annually in January at the Hualalai Resort Golf Club in Kaūpūlehu in the Kona district, and Mitsubishi Electric is the main sponsor. The field consists of the senior major champions of the last five years and other tournament winners of the last two years, plus a few sponsor invitees. The purse in 2020 was $1.8 million, with a winner's share of $305,000. The tournament debuted in 1984 as the senior division within the PGA Tour's MONY Tournament of Champions at LaCosta Resort in Carlsbad, California. The purse was $100,000 and Orville Moody won by seven strokes to take the winner's share of $30,000. Kaupulehu, Hawaii
Kaūpūlehu is the site of a historic settlement on the west coast of Hawaii island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Devastated by a lava flow, the area is now the home of luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Geography Kaūpūlehu is located at in the northern part of the Kona district. The name comes from ''Ka ulu pūlehu'' which means "the roasted breadfruit" in the Hawaiian language. Access is from the lower Hawaii Belt Road, known as Route 19 or Queen Kaahumanu Highway. In 1800, the volcano Hualālai erupted and the resulting lava flow reached the sea near Kaūpūlehu. Oral histories tell of a bay and fishponds that were destroyed. The flow is named after Kaūpūlehu. The crater on the side of Hualālai resulting from the eruption is also given the name Kaūpūlehu, located at about elevation, . Frederick Steven Couples (born October 3, 1959) is an American professional golfer who has competed on the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions. Retief Goosen (born 3 February 1969) is a South African professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour Champions. Darren Christopher Clarke, (born 14 August 1968) is a professional golfer from Northern Ireland who currently plays on the PGA Tour Champions and has previously played on the European Tour and PGA Tour. Steven Craig Alker (born 28 July 1971) is a professional golfer from New Zealand who plays on the PGA Tour Champions, where he has won five events. He won the season-long 2022 Charles Schwab Cup on the PGA Tour Champions. Early life and professional career Alker was born in Hamilton, New Zealand. Orville Moody
Orville James Moody (December 9, 1933 – August 8, 2008) was an American professional golfer who won numerous tournaments in his career. He won the U.S. Open in 1969, the last champion in the 20th century to win through local and sectional qualifying. Early life Born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, Moody was the youngest of ten children. The son of a golf course superintendent, he began his career at Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, winning the 1952 state high school golf championship. After attempting college for a few weeks at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Moody joined the U.S. Army. He was able to continue playing golf while in uniform, winning the All-Service championship and three Korea Opens. He spent fourteen years in the Army, heading up maintenance supervision and instruction at all Army golf courses.
