Alfred Massé
Alfred Massé (2 June 1870 – 28 December 1951) was a French lawyer, journalist and politician who was twice Minister of Commerce and Industry shortly before World War I (1914–18). Early years Alfred Louis François Pierre Massé was born on 2 June 1870 in Pougues-les-Eaux, Nièvre. He was the son of a former mayor of Nevers and former general councilor. His grandfather, also Alfred Massé, was a Senator for Nièvre. Massé became a lawyer and publicist. He edited ''La Tribune'' and contributed to ''Le Siècle'', ''La Lanterne'', and ''Le Rappel''. He participated in conferences of the Union of Republican Youth, and in pro-democracy demonstrations in the Latin Quarter. Julie Masse (born June 3, 1970) is a Canadian pop singer. Biography Masse was born in Greenfield Park, Quebec. She released her self-titled debut album in 1990, a French language album that made her a star in Quebec and France, with the singles "C'est Zéro", "Billy", "Sans t'oublier" and "Prends bien garde". Her second album, ''À Contre Jour'', followed in 1992. In 1993, she won the Juno Award for Best New Female Artist. She married cinematographer Sylvain Brault the same year. In 1994, she released her debut English language album, ''Circle of One'', on which she collaborated with Corey Hart (known for his early-1980s pop hits, such as " Sunglasses at Night"). Victor Massé (born ''Félix-Marie Massé''; 7 March 1822 – 5 July 1884) was a French composer. Biography Massé was born in Lorient (Morbihan) and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, winning the Prix de Rome in 1844 for his cantata ''Le Rénégat de Tanger'' before turning his attention to opera. While at the Conservatoire, Massé studied with Jaques Halévy. He wrote some twenty operas, including ''La Chanteuse voilée'' (1850), followed by the more ambitious ''Galathée'' (1852) and ''Paul et Virginie'' (1876). His best-known and most successful work was the ''opéra comique'' ''Les Noces de Jeannette'' (1853). His last work, ''Une Nuit de Cléopâtre'', was performed posthumously in April 1885. Marcel Massé (born June 23, 1940) is a Canadian politician and civil servant. Biography Massé was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1940 and graduated from McGill University and Pembroke College, Oxford (as Rhodes Scholar in 1963). He served as Clerk of the Privy Council in 1979 during the government of Prime Minister Joe Clark. In his distinguished public service career, he also served as President of the Canadian International Development Agency, on two occasions; was undersecretary for external affairs; and represented Canada as its executive director at the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. Biography Background Masse was educated at the Université de Montréal and pursued graduate work in Paris. He worked as a high school teacher in Joliette, Quebec from 1962 to 1966. Provincial politics In the 1966 Quebec provincial election, he was elected to the Quebec legislative assembly in the riding of Montcalm as a member of the Union Nationale (UN), a conservative political party. He served as a minister in the governments of Quebec premiers Daniel Johnson (1966–1968) and Jean-Jacques Bertrand (1968–1970). Masse was re-elected in 1970.
