Victor Massé
Victor Massé (born ''Félix-Marie Massé''; 7 March 1822 – 5 July 1884) was a French composer. Biography Massé was born in Lorient (Morbihan) and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, winning the Prix de Rome in 1844 for his cantata ''Le Rénégat de Tanger'' before turning his attention to opera. While at the Conservatoire, Massé studied with Jaques Halévy. He wrote some twenty operas, including ''La Chanteuse voilée'' (1850), followed by the more ambitious ''Galathée'' (1852) and ''Paul et Virginie'' (1876). His best-known and most successful work was the ''opéra comique'' ''Les Noces de Jeannette'' (1853). His last work, ''Une Nuit de Cléopâtre'', was performed posthumously in April 1885. Massé died in Paris and is buried in Montmartre Cemetery. in the 9th arrondissement of Paris is named after him. Michel Carré
Michel Carré (20 October 1821, Besançon – 27 June 1872, Argenteuil) was a prolific French librettist. He went to Paris in 1840 intending to become a painter but took up writing instead. He wrote verse and plays before turning to writing libretti. He wrote the text for Charles Gounod's ''Mireille'' (1864) on his own, and collaborated with Eugène Cormon on Bizet's ''Les pêcheurs de perles''. However, the majority of his libretti were completed in tandem with Jules Barbier, with whom he wrote the libretti for numerous operas, including Camille Saint-Saëns's ''Le timbre d'argent'' (libretto written in 1864, first performed in 1877), Gounod's ''Faust'' (1859), '' Roméo et Juliette'' (1867), and Offenbach's ''Les contes d'Hoffmann'' (1881). As with the other libretti by Barbier and himself, these were adaptations of existing literary masterworks. Louis-François-Marie Nicolaïe (28 January 1811 – 8 February 1879), better known as Clairville, was a 19th-century French comedian, poet, chansonnier, goguettier and playwright.
