A Massachusetts general election was held on November 7, 1978 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The election included: * statewide elections for United States Senator, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Treasurer, and Auditor; * district elections for U.S. Representatives, State Representatives, State Senators, and Governor's Councillors; and * ballot questions at the state and local levels. Democratic and Republican candidates were selected in party primaries held September 14, 1978. Governor and lieutenant governor Democrats Edward J. King and Thomas P. 1978 United States Elections
The 1978 United States elections were held on November 7, 1978, to elect the members of the 96th United States Congress. The election occurred in the middle of Democratic President Jimmy Carter's term. Democrats retained control of both houses of Congress. The Democrats lost three seats in the United States Senate to the Republican Party. Democrats won the nationwide popular vote for the House of Representatives by a margin of 8.9 percentage points, but lost fifteen seats to Republicans. The elections represent the most recent instance in which the president's party retained control of both houses of Congress in a midterm election, although the 2002 elections saw Republicans retain the House and win control of the Senate. Lois Pines
Lois Pines is an American politician who served in the Massachusetts General Court and was a candidate for statewide office four times. Early life Pines was born on August 16, 1940 in Malden, Massachusetts. She graduated from Barnard College in 1960 and then attended Boston University School of Law, but did not graduate. In 1963 she graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Law. Political career From 1972 to 1973, Pines was an at-large member of the Newton, Massachusetts Board of Aldermen. From 1973 to 1979 she was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1978, she was a candidate for Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Paul Henry Guzzi (born June 17, 1942) is an American businessman and former Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. He was president and chief executive officer of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce for 19 years. Biography Paul Guzzi graduated from Harvard University with a degree in government. Guzzi was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1971 to 1974. In the 1974 general election Guzzi defeated Republican state Senator John M. Quinlan to be elected Secretary of the Commonwealth. Guzzi served as Secretary from 1975 to 1978. William Floyd Weld (born July 31, 1945) is an American attorney, businessman, author, and politician who served as the 68th Governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Francis Bellotti
Francis Xavier Bellotti (born May 3, 1923) is an American lawyer and politician. In his first campaign he was the Democratic nominee for District Attorney of Norfolk County in 1958, but was defeated in the general election. In 1962 Bellotti was elected as Lieutenant Governor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1963 to 1965. In 1964 he had challenged the sitting governor of his own party, Endicott Peabody, and defeated him in the Democratic Primary; but lost in the general election to John Volpe who thus regained the seat he had lost in 1962. In 1966 Belloti was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General but was defeated by Republican Elliot Richardson. From 1975 to 1987 he served three terms as Massachusetts Attorney General.
