María Fernanda Silva
María Fernanda Silva (born 20 December 1965) is an Argentine career diplomat, and the current ambassador of Argentina to the Holy See. She is the first woman to hold the ambassadorship to the Holy See, as well as the first Afro-Argentine to lead an Argentine diplomatic mission. Early life and education Silva was born on 20 December 1965 in Buenos Aires to an Argentine father and a Cape Verdean mother. From an early age, she was politically active in Afro-Argentine activist groups, and later in life she worked as an advisor to government agencies dealing with Afro-Argentine issues, as she considers Afro-Argentines to be an "invisibilized community". She studied Political Science with a specialization in International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina. Foreign relations between Argentina and the Holy See, have existed for over a century. The current pope, Pope Francis, was the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires. History Argentina, which was a Spanish colony as part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, lost its relation with the Holy See during the Argentine War of Independence. Both countries reestablished diplomatic relations on 17 April 1840, during the administration of Juan Manuel de Rosas. Alicia Amalia Castro (born 27 July 1949) is an Argentine diplomat who served as Argentina's ambassador to the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016. Career Castro entered politics through the trade union movement, having previously worked as a flight attendant for Aerolíneas Argentinas. She was elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies in 1997 as a deputy for Buenos Aires Province, and she was subsequently re-elected in 2001.
