Maryland Route 537
Maryland Route 537 (MD 537) is a collection of unsigned highway, unsigned state highways in the U.S. state of Maryland. These two existing highways and two former sections of state highway are segments of the old alignment of U.S. Route 213 (US 213), which is now Maryland Route 213, MD 213, in Chesapeake City, Maryland, Chesapeake City in southern Cecil County, Maryland, Cecil County. Some of the roads that became segments of MD 537 were constructed in the mid-1910s as part of the original state road between Elkton, Maryland, Elkton and Cecilton, Maryland, Cecilton. Other portions of MD 537 were part of the approach roads to a bridge across the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal that was built in the mid-1920s and destroyed in 1942. After the modern Chesapeake City Bridge and its approach roads were completed in 1949, US 213 was moved to the new bridge and approach roads and MD 537 was assigned to the bypassed sections of US 213. The Maryland State Highway Administration (abbreviated MDOT SHA or simply SHA) is the state transportation business unit responsible for maintaining Maryland's numbered highways outside Baltimore City. Right-in/right-out (RIRO) and left-in/left-out (LILO) refer to a type of three-way road intersection where turning movements of vehicles are restricted. A RIRO permits only right turns and a LILO permits only left turns. "Right-in" and "left-in" refer to turns from a main road ''into'' an intersection (or a driveway or parcel); "right-out" and "left-out" refer to turns ''from'' an intersection (or a driveway or parcel) to a main road. A vertical-lift bridge or just lift bridge is a type of movable bridge in which a span rises vertically while remaining parallel with the deck. The vertical lift offers several benefits over other movable bridges such as the bascule and swing-span bridges. Generally speaking, they cost less to build for longer moveable spans. The counterweights in a vertical lift are only required to be equal to the weight of the deck, whereas bascule bridge counterweights must weigh several times as much as the span being lifted. As a result, heavier materials can be used in the deck, and so this type of bridge is especially suited for heavy railroad use. Bohemia Manor High School
Bohemia Manor High School is a public school operated by Cecil County Public Schools located approximately south of the small town of Chesapeake City in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. This is a small school of 685 students which shares its campus with Bohemia Manor Middle School. This school serves the Maryland communities of Chesapeake City, Cecilton, Galena, Earleville and the parts of Elkton. The school is also known by the nickname Bo Manor. Maryland Route 342 (MD 342) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as St. Augustine Road, the highway runs from MD 310 at St. Augustine north to unsigned MD 537 in Chesapeake City in southern Cecil County. MD 342 was constructed in its entirety by 1915. Route description MD 342 begins at an intersection with MD 310 (Cayots Corner Road) at the hamlet of St. Augustine. Maryland Route 286
Maryland Route 286 (MD 286) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Bethel Road, the highway runs from George Street, which is one of the segments of unsigned MD 537, east through Chesapeake City to the Delaware state line, where the highway continues east as Delaware Route 286 (DE 286). MD 286 roughly parallels the south side of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in southern Cecil County. The highway was constructed around 1930 and originally served the former community of Bethel instead of crossing the state line.
