Mary-Ann Kirkby
Mary-Ann Kirkby (born 1959) is a Canadian author who has written two memoirs about her upbringing in the Hutterite tradition. Early life Kirkby was born on a Hutterite colony in Manitoba to Ronald and Mary Dornn. Her family left the colony in 1969 when Kirkby was ten years old due to a conflict between Kirkby's father and the colony's head minister. Kirkby studied broadcast journalism in college, eventually becoming a television reporter and singer. Books Kirkby has written two books about her Hutterite upbringing. ''I Am Hutterite'' was originally self-published in 2007, earning enough commercial and critical success to lead to a 2010 re-release by publishers Key Porter Books in Canada and Thomas Nelson in the United States. The follow up, ''Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen'', was published in 2014. Hutterite
Hutterites (german: link=no, Hutterer), also called Hutterian Brethren (German: ), are a communal ethnoreligious group, ethnoreligious branch of Anabaptism, Anabaptists, who, like the Amish and Mennonites, trace their roots to the Radical Reformation of the early 16th century and have formed intentional communities. The founder of the Hutterites, Jacob Hutter, "established the Hutterite colonies on the basis of the Schleitheim Confession, a classic Anabaptist statement of faith" of 1527, and the first communes were formed in 1528. Since the death of Hutter in 1536, the beliefs of the Hutterites, especially those espousing a community of goods and nonresistance, have resulted in hundreds of years of diaspora in many countries. Founded in 1979 by Anna Porter, later well known as a writer, the company specialized in Canadian non-fiction, although it published some fiction too. It ceased operations in January 2011. Gordon Kirkby
Gordon Kirkby (born 26 September 1958) was a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Prince Albert—Churchill River from 1993 to 1997. History Kirkby was first elected to Prince Albert City Council as an alderman in October 1985. Kirkby was mayor of his home town Prince Albert from 1988 until 1993, when he won the riding of Prince Albert—Churchill River in the 1993 federal election as a member of the Liberal party. He was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 23 February 1996 to 1 June 1997. Kirkby lost to Reform party candidate Derrek Konrad in the 1997 election, finishing third in the riding, which had been restructured as Prince Albert.
