Martin McNamara (Gaelic Footballer)
Martin McNamara (born 11 November 1966) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer from Corofin, County Galway, Ireland. McNamara was the reliable servant in goal for the Galway county team for several years. It was the time when a Galway match wouldn't be a Galway match without a McNamara save of blinding quality. Unfortunately it was also the time of a barren spell for the Galway team. That barren spell seemed to turn around with a first Connacht title in 8 years in 1995 and a narrow semi-final defeat to Tyrone but Mayo seemed to halt any revival that Galway were planning when they reached the next two All-Ireland finals, both at Galway's expense in Connacht. As the 98 championship approached, retirement from inter-county football was a serious prospect for McNamara. He considered such a thought after playing a key role in Corofin's All-Ireland Club Championship winning team of 1998 but decided to continue for the time being. The 1997 Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 111th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 11 May 1997 and ended on 28 September 1997. Meath entered the championship as the defending champions; however, they were defeated by Offaly in the Leinster final. On 28 September 1997 Kerry, the most successful county in Gaelic football history, claimed their 31st All-Ireland title - and their first since 1986 - with a 0–13 to 1–7 victory over Mayo. Paul Doherty is a former inter-county goalkeeper for Galway. Doherty made his Championship debut against Mayo in May 2007 and has been a first choice for the county in the Championship ever since. In the 2007 Connacht SFC semi-final against Leitrim, the then manager of Galway, Peter Forde, praised Doherty after Donal Brennan's shot was stopped by Doherty. "The opposition is always going to have chances during a 70 minute game. That is what we expect our goalkeeper to do, to pull off a great save like that when it is needed and thankfully he did that.
