Martin Bridge
The Martin Bridge is a road bridge that carries the Manning River Drive across the Manning River in Taree, in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. In 2010 the bridge was added to New South Wales State Heritage Register. Description The Martin Bridge is a steel truss bridge of eleven spans, each long, on concrete supports, with three steel girder approach spans each long. The total bridge length is . Originally it had a lifting span with two concrete counterbalances. The bridge was opened on 18 May 1940 by the Premier of New South Wales, Alexander Mair, and replaced a steam-driven timber ferry service, in operation since 1902, located at the end of Pulteney Street (the redundant section of approach road on the southern bank of the Manning River leading to the ferry was renamed Old Punt Road). Lewis Martin (Australian Politician)
Lewis Ormsby Martin (1870 – 17 April 1944) was an Australian politician. Life He was born on 16 May 1870 in Bairnsdale, Victoria, to miner Robert Martin and his wife Antoinette Louisa. While Lewis was still young the family moved to New South Wales. Here he was educated privately by a tutor, W. Compton. He was articled a solicitor's clerk in 1889, and studied at the University of Sydney, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1893 and a Bachelor of Law in 1895, the year he was admitted as a solicitor. He settled in Taree, where he accumulated several properties. In 1900 he married Lucy Danvers, with whom he had eight children. He died at Taree in 1944. Career He served on Taree Council from 1906 to 1928, with periods as mayor from 1911 to 1913. Taree
Taree is a town on the Mid North Coast, New South Wales, Australia. Taree and nearby Cundletown were settled in 1831 by William Wynter. Since then Taree has grown to a population of 26,381, and is the centre of a significant agricultural district. It is 16 km from the Tasman Sea coast, and 317 km north of Sydney. The Manning River railway bridge is a heritage-listed railway bridge that carries the North Coast line across the Manning River located at Mount George, near in the Mid-Coast Council local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The bridge is also known as the Mount George Rail Bridge over Manning River. The property is owned by RailCorp, an agency of the Government of New South Wales.
