Martin Atock
Martin Atock, also formerly known as Martin Attock, was an English railway engineer, who is best known as the Locomotive Superintendent of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) from 1872 to 1900. Life Atock was born in June 1834 in Preston, Lancashire to George and Hephzibah Attock. His baptism took place in the parish church of St John's Minster, Preston, St. John the Evangelist± on 26 June 1834 where the Reverend Roger Carus Wilson recorded his name as ''Martin Atock'' using the common spelling of the surname for the locality rather than that of his father. He moved to Stratford, London when his father George (Atock) Attock became Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR), a predecessor of the Great Eastern Railway. He followed father into railway engineering becoming a draftsman. Preston () is a city on the north bank of the River Ribble in Lancashire, England. MGWR Class H
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) Class H were an 0-6-0 locomotive bought in 1880 from Avonside Engine Company. After 1925 they became Great Southern Railways (GSR) class 619 / Inchicore class J6. Fleet History The MGWR acquired these engines at a favourable price from the Avonside Engine Company when the original customer, the Waterford, Dungarvan and Lismore Railway, refused the locomotives due to late delivery and other potential buyers had rejected them. They were notable for being fitted with more comfortable and spacious cabs compared to contemporary MGWR designed locomotives. Due to lack of vacuum train brakes they were confined to North Wall freight yard workings until their first and very extensive rebuild in 1906-1908. Henry Edward Cusack
Henry Edward Cusack (1865-1954) was a Locomotive Superintendent of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR). Life Edward Cusack was born on 6 November 1865. He was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, England. His father, Sir Ralph Smith Cusack was Chairman of the MGWR from 1865 to 1905 and his brother-in-law, Major Major James William Henry Claud "H.C." Cusack was Deputy Chairman of the MGWR from 1905. His mother was Elizabeth Barker He served a four-year apprenticeship with Kitson and Company, England, followed by two years at Crewe, then returned to Ireland as a junior draughtsman in 1890. He married Constance Louisa Vernon in 1892. When Martin Atock announced his intended retirement from the MGWR Henry Edward Cusack was appointed his joint first assistant locomotive engineer with Basil Hope from the North Eastern Railway.
