Marthinus Bekker
Vice Admiral Marthinus Bekker (born 1933) was a former South African Navy officer, who served as Chief of the SADF Staff. Naval career He joined the Navy in 1957 and served on the before being transferred to England to join the shipbuilding program for the President class frigates. He also served as Chief Paymaster, Director of Logistics Systems and Quartermaster General (19761982). He was later appointed the Minister of Finance for the Ciskei homeland in 1992. He was appointed Chief of the SADF Staff, replacing Kat Liebenberg. Before that he served as Chief of Staff Finances. South African Navy
The South African Navy (SA Navy) is the naval warfare branch of the South African National Defence Force. Ciskei
Ciskei (, or ) was a Bantustan for the Xhosa people-located in the southeast of South Africa. It covered an area of , almost entirely surrounded by what was then the Cape Province, and possessed a small coastline along the shore of the Indian Ocean. Under South Africa's policy of apartheid, land was set aside for black peoples in self-governing territories. Ciskei was designated as one of two homelands, or "Bantustans", for Xhosa-speaking people. Xhosa people were forcibly resettled in the Ciskei and Transkei, the other Xhosa homeland. In contrast to the Transkei, which was largely contiguous and deeply rural, and governed by hereditary chiefs, the area that became the Ciskei had initially been made up of a patchwork of "reserves", interspersed with pockets of white-owned farms. Andreas Liebenberg
General Andreas "Kat" Liebenberg, (18 April 1938 – 23 May 1998) was a South African military commander. He served as General Officer Commanding South African Special Forces (1982–85), Chief of the Army (1985–90) and Chief of the South African Defence Force (1990–93). Military career Liebenberg joined the South African Army in 1955 and, after obtaining a BA Law degree at the University of Stellenbosch, was commissioned in 1961. Liebenberg was posted to London as a military attache in 1969. In 1972, he returned from London to become second in command of the Army Gymnasium. Two years later he was back at Army Headquarters as a Staff Officer before becoming Director Infantry and, in December 1977, as a colonel, Officer Commanding 2 Military Area (later called Sector 10) at Oshakati. The Chief of Defence Force Staff (C Def F S) was a post in the South African Defence Force and the South African National Defence Force. History The Chief of Defence Force Staff was a lieutenant general post in the South African Defence Force which traces its origins from the sixties. Lieutenant-General Pierre Derksen Steyn (born 25 November 1942) is a retired South African Air Force officer who served as Secretary for Defence from 1994 to 1998, and as Chief of Defence Force Staff from 1990 to 1993. He is also known as the chair of the Steyn Commission, which from 1992 to 1993 investigated allegations of criminal and third force activity by the apartheid-era South African Defence Force.
