Marthe Armitage
Marthe Armitage is a British wallpaper designer whose work is characterized by unique hand-drawn designs that are hand printed from lino blocks, varying in size. She makes designs for wallpapers, and curtains. Early life After World War II, Armitage studied at the Chelsea School of Art, where she trained to be a painter. Career In the 1950s, after she was married and had children, Armitage started designing and making lino-cut wallpaper. Over time, she became known for her hand-drawn and hand-printed designs. After sketching the design, she uses hand-cut lino blocks and a century-old offset lithographic printing press to create custom-printed rolls of wallpaper. She works in a studio in her garage, where she keeps her printing press. Her daughter, Joanna Broadhurst, works as her assistant. In 1993 she was elected as Master of the Art Workers' Guild. Marthe Flandrin (1904–1987) was a French artist and painter, specializing in frescos, as at Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët, but also producing designs for mosaics and tapestries, such as her 1962 ceiling mosaics for Notre-Dame de la Trinité Basilica in Blois. Marthe Richard, née ''Betenfeld'' (15 August 1889, in Blâmont – 9 February 1982,) was a French politician and spy. She worked towards the closing of brothels in France in 1946. Early life In Nancy, she became an apprentice to a tailor at fourteen, but later was registered as a prostitute in 1905. After a soldier accused her of giving him syphilis, she was forced to leave for Paris, where she met, in 1907, and later wed, Henry Richer. He was a rich industrialist who worked at Les Halles. In 1912, her husband bought himself a plane, and she flew it for the first time in 1913. She claimed in the press at the time to have broken the female record for the Le Crotoy– Zurich trip. She actually only flew the plane to Burgundy, whence it was shipped by train to the Zurich countryside, and flew it into Zurich. However, the new record was approved. Marthe Rakine
Marthe Rakine (November 20, 1904 – July 27, 1996) was a Canadian, later Swiss, painter who was born in the Russian Empire, and was one of Canada's best colourists. Career Rakine was born in Moscow to a Swiss father and French mother from Provence. The family moved to Paris when she was young, and she began her studies at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in that city in 1926. She also took lessons at the Sorbonne and with Othon Friesz at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in the mid-1930s. She married the painter Boris Rakine, with whom she lived outside of Paris and with whom she emigrated to Canada in 1948. She next enrolled at the Ontario College of Art, taking ceramics and studying there from 1949 to 1950. She exhibited widely in Canada and abroad, both in solo and in group shows. Marthe Niel (29 December 1878 – 18 November 1928) was a French aviator, becoming the second woman in the world to earn an aeroplane pilot's licence on 19 September 1910. Early life Niel was born Marie-Ange Denieul in Le Cannée, a hamlet in the commune of Paimpont, Ille-et-Vilaine. Marthe-Emilie Munsterman (born 19 February 1993) is a Dutch football midfielder, who plays for Women's Eredivisie club Ajax and has twice played for the Netherlands women's national football team. Marthe Kristoffersen (born 11 August 1989 in Vannøya, Troms) is a Norwegian cross-country skier who has competed since 2006. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, she finished 21st in the 30 km and 49th in the 10 km event. Marthe Hanau (1890 – 19 July 1935) was a Frenchwoman who successfully defrauded French financial markets in the 1920s and the 1930s. Early life Marthe Hanau was born in Lille to the family of a Jewish industrialist. She married and later divorced Lazare Bloch. In 1925, she and Bloch, who remained business partners after their divorce, founded an economic newspaper, ''La Gazette du Franc et des Nations''. Hanau used the newspaper to dispense stock tips to financial speculators. Fraud Hanau's paper promoted mainly the stocks and securities of her own business partners, whose businesses were mere shells or paper companies. Still, the value of their stock kept rising when stockbrokers bought and traded them.
