Marta Orriols
Marta Orriols (Sabadell, 1975) is a Catalan writer from Spain. She studied cinematographic scriptwriting at the Bande à Part film school in Barcelona and creative writing at the Ateneu Barcelonès. She received the 2018 Òmnium Prize for best Catalan-language novel by Òmnium Cultural, the No Llegiu Prize, and the Illa dels Llibres Prize for Best Novel of 2018. Her novel has been translated to several languages, including English (''Learning to talk to plants'', published by Pushkin Press Pushkin Press is a British-based publishing house dedicated to publishing novels, essays, memoirs and children's books. Sabadell
Sabadell () is a city in Catalonia, Spain. It is in the south of the ''comarca'' of Vallès Occidental and its joint capital (co-capital), on the River Ripoll, north of Barcelona. Sabadell is located above sea level. Sabadell pioneered the Industrial Revolution in Catalonia with its textile mills, together with its archrival Terrassa. Thus, in the mid-19th century, it became the most important wool city in Spain, being nicknamed the "Catalan Manchester#Industrial Revolution, Manchester". Today many mills from that period can still be seen, with most of them having been refurbished as residential buildings or other services. Ã’mnium Prize
The Òmnium Prize for Best Novel of the Year is a literary prize awarded by the Òmnium Cultural association for a Catalan-language novel. It has a €20,000 award for the author and a €5,000 award for the publisher of the work. It is the best-funded prize for a published Catalan-language novel. History The prize was created in 2017 with a €20,000 direct donation for the author and a marketing campaign valued at €5,000, with the intention of annually recognizing the best Catalan-language novel and make it known to the public. It is similar to the Prix Goncourt for French literature. Òmnium Cultural () is a Catalan association based in Barcelona, Catalonia. It was originally created in the 1960s to promote the Catalan language and spread Catalan culture. Over the years it has increased its involvement in broader political issues; in 2012 it committed itself to Catalan independence, specifically demanding the right of self-determination for Catalonia. Leaders of the abortive Catalan independence referendum such as Jordi Cuixart were simultaneously holding leadership positions at Òmnium.
