Marszałkowska Street, Warsaw
Marszałkowska (''lit. Marshal Street'') is one of the main thoroughfares of Warsaw's city center. It links Bank Square in its north sector with ''Plac Unii Lubelskiej'' (Union of Lublin Square) in the south. History Contrary to a common urban legend that attributes the name to Marshal of Poland Józef Piłsudski, the street's name actually relates to 18th-century Grand Marshal of the Crown Franciszek Bieliński. Marszałkowska street was established by Franciszek Bieliński and opened in 1757. It was much shorter then, running only from Królewska Street to Widok Street. The street was almost entirely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Bank Square, Warsaw
Plac Bankowy ( en, 'Bank Square', formerly ''Plac Dzierżyńskiego'') is one of Warsaw's principal squares. Located in the downtown district, adjacent to the Saxon Garden and Warsaw Arsenal, it is also a principal public-transport hub, with bus and streetcar stops and a Warsaw Metro station. History Created in the 19th century, under the Congress Kingdom, the square was designed to be an elegant area of the country's capital. Notable buildings included the Palace of the Ministry of Revenues and Treasury (a building reconstructed by Antonio Corazzi), the Bank of Poland and the Warsaw Stock Exchange (also by Corazzi). The square was originally triangular-shaped. Between 1875 and 1878 the Great Synagogue was built on the eastern side of the square, across from the palace. Franciszek Bieliński of Junosza coat of arms (1683–1766) was a Polish statesman. A Grand Marshal of the Crown, Marshal of Prussia and a voivode of Chełmno, he is best remembered as a strong proponent of the expansion and the modernisation of the city of Warsaw. He is also the eponym of Marszałkowska Street ''(Marshal Street)'' in Warsaw, one of the major and most iconic streets of Poland's capital. The Warsaw Uprising ( pl, powstanie warszawskie; german: Warschauer Aufstand) was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance movement in World War II, Polish underground resistance to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. It occurred in the summer of 1944, and it was led by the Polish resistance Home Army ( pl, Armia Krajowa).
