Marsden Gemini
The Marsden Gemini is a Canadian mid-wing, T-tailed, two-seats in side-by-side configuration, experimental research glider that was designed and constructed by David Marsden at the University of Alberta, first flying in 1973. Design and development The Gemini was designed to explore the use of flaps to create a variable geometry sailplane that would be optimized for both low speed thermalling flight and also high speed gliding between thermals. The aircraft was predominantly made from aluminium, with some stainless steel used for the wing ribs, controls and fittings. The two-place side-by-side cockpit was made from fibreglass. Its four-piece span high aspect ratio wing employed a modified Wortmann FX-61-163/35SF airfoil. The Fowler flaps occupied the entire trailing edge of the wing and accounted for 35% of the wing chord. SZD-19 Zefir
The SZD-19 Zefir (''Szybowcowy Zakład Doświadczalny'' - Glider Experimental Works) is a single-seat glider aircraft that was designed and built in Poland from 1957. Although they all bore the same name, the different versions of Zefir were actually quite different gliders in terms of materials used, design and performance. What unified them most was the person of the lead designer - Bugumił Szuba and the use of large Fowler flaps to get superior (for the era) performance both at low and high-speed flight. The Zefir series (in particular Zefir-3, with its L/D of 42+) is perhaps the ultimate design of the wooden glider construction era. Operation Sigma Sigma
The Sigma is an experimental glider developed in Britain from 1966 by a team led by Nicholas Goodhart. After disappointing performance during flight testing the Sigma was passed on to a Canadian group which carried out modifications, making the Sigma more competitive. Design and development Designed to compete in the 1970 World Championships, the team aimed to develop a wing that would climb well through a high lift coefficient and a large wing area, but equally had the "maximum possible reduction of area for cruise at low lift coefficients". At the same time for the minimum possible drag they aimed for "extensive" laminar flow. To achieve this they employed flaps that would alter both wing area and wing camber. The L-13 Blaník is a two-seater trainer Glider (sailplane), glider produced by Let Kunovice since 1956. It is the most numerous and widely used glider in the world. Beatty-Johl BJ-2 Assegai
The Beatty-Johl BJ-2 Assegai was a single seat, high performance competition glider built in South Africa in the early 1960s. Only one was built; it was optimised for South African conditions and performed well there, winning two nationals and setting several records, but was less successful under European conditions at the 1965 World Gliding Championships. Design and development The BJ-2 was a successor to the BJ-1, a 60 ft (18.3 m) span glider on which design began in South Africa in 1945 but abandoned before completion as it became clear that the new laminar flow airfoil sections offered better performance. Barringer Trophy
The Lewin B. Barringer Memorial Trophy was established by the will of Lewin Barringer in 1948. The original rules specified that the trophy would be awarded for the longest distance soaring flight from any type of launching method other than airplane tow. The trophy would become the permanent property of any pilot who won it three times in succession. History Paul Bikle was the first pilot to win the Trophy three times in succession. He subsequently donated the trophy back to the Soaring Society of America as a perpetual trophy.
