Barringer Trophy
The Lewin B. Barringer Memorial Trophy was established by the will of Lewin Barringer in 1948. The original rules specified that the trophy would be awarded for the longest distance soaring flight from any type of launching method other than airplane tow. The trophy would become the permanent property of any pilot who won it three times in succession. History Paul Bikle was the first pilot to win the Trophy three times in succession. He subsequently donated the trophy back to the Soaring Society of America as a perpetual trophy. In 1957 the SSA Directors, with Bikle's approval, changed the rules to allow for any type of launch method and include any flights, other than those flown at the US National Contest. Soaring Society Of America
The Soaring Society of America (SSA) was founded at the instigation of Warren E. Eaton to promote the sport of soaring in the USA and internationally. The first meeting was held in New York City in the McGraw–Hill Building on February 20, 1932. Its first objective was to hold a national soaring competition every year, but other roles were quickly adopted. In 1954, the Society created the Soaring Hall of Fame. Today the SSA, with a nationwide membership of over 10,000, is headquartered in Hobbs, New Mexico. It is a 501(c)(3) charity organization. The SSA is led by the 17 members on its board of directors and its executive committee, ten of whom are regionally elected by the general membership and serve for three years. The other seven at-large directors are elected annually by the other directors. Originally designed by Leonard Niemi as a homebuilt sailplane, its first flight in 1958 showed such promise that Niemi decided instead to manufacture it in series production. Ross R-6
The Ross R-6 is a tandem two-seat, high-wing glider that was designed by Harland Ross and first flown in 1956. Design and development Ross designed the R-6 as a two-seat sailplane with the intention of setting new multi-place records with it. The aircraft was initially designed to use the same span wing as the highly successful Ross-Johnson RJ-5, but with a gross weight of as opposed to the RJ-5's this gave the R-6 one of the highest wing loadings for a glider of its day. The R-6 was constructed with a metal fuselage, which was a departure from Ross's earlier designs.
