Marquard Wocher
Marquard Wocher (7 September 1769, Mimmenhausen, Germany – 1830, Basel, Switzerland) was a German painter who spent most of his life in Switzerland. He is known for the Wocher Panorama, a cyclorama of Thun, one of the few still existing cycloramas in the world and the oldest still existing. Early life and education Marquard Wocher was born on 7 September 1760 in the village Mimmenhausen near Salem, Germany as the son of the painter Tiberius Wocher. His father settled to Bern, Marquard followed him soon and was trained as a painter by him. For a short while he was employed at the workshop of the painter Johann Ludwig Aeberli, who introduced him to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1779. In 1782 he eventually installed himself in Basel. Professional career He created the seals for the Helvetic Republic in 1798. Marquard is a small farming town in the Free State province of South Africa that serves Winburg in the northwest. The town was set up in 1905 by an influential Dutch Reform minister, JJ Marquard, with the help of Christoffel Cornelis Froneman, the commandant of the Orange Free State. Jungfrau
The Jungfrau ( "maiden, virgin"), at is one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall of mountains overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau, one of the most distinctive sights of the Swiss Alps. The summit was first reached on August 3, 1811, by the Meyer brothers of Aarau and two chamois hunters from Valais. The ascent followed a long expedition over the glaciers and high passes of the Bernese Alps. It was not until 1865 that a more direct route on the northern side was opened. Franz Niklaus König (1765–1832) was a Swiss painter of genre art and portraits. After studying under Tiberius and Marquard Wocher, Sigmund Freudenberger and Balthasar Anton Dunker, he made a name for himself through dress pictures, rural genre scenes and landscapes. Unspunnenfest
Unspunnenfest is a festival held in the town of Interlaken, Switzerland, near the old ruin of Unspunnen Castle, in the Bernese Alps, approximately once every twelve years, most recently in 2017. The festival highlights traditional Swiss culture and features competitions of '' Steinstossen'' (stone throwing), '' Schwingen'' (wrestling) and yodeling. The stone throwing competition uses an stone known as the ''Unspunnenstein'' ("Unspunnen Stone"), made of Aare granite from the Hasli valley. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, better known as Raphael (; or ; March 28 or April 6, 1483April 6, 1520), was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Carlo Dolci
Carlo (or Carlino) Dolci (25 May 1616 – 17 January 1686) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Florence, known for highly finished religious pictures, often repeated in many versions. Biography He was born in Florence, on his mother's side the grandson of a painter. He was precocious and apprenticed at a young age to Jacopo Vignali, and when only eleven years of age he attempted a whole figure of St John, and a head of the infant Christ, which received some approbation. However Dolci was not prolific. "He would take weeks over a single foot", according to his biographer Baldinucci. His painstaking technique made him unsuited for large-scale fresco painting. Guido Reni (; 4 November 1575 – 18 August 1642) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, although his works showed a classical manner, similar to Simon Vouet, Nicolas Poussin, and Philippe de Champaigne. Schadau Castle
Schadau Castle (german: Schloss Schadau) is a castle on the south side of the Aare near Lake Thun in the city of Thun, Canton Bern, Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. History It is situated in the ''Schadaupark'', and was built between 1846 and 1854 according to the plans of Pierre-Charles Dusillon in the Gothic Revival style, for the banker Abraham Denis Alfred de Rougemont Since 1925 the castle has belonged to the city of Thun and contains a restaurant and the Swiss Gastronomy Museum. Between 1972 and 1992 the façade of the castle was renovated by the city's own quarrymen.
