Marqua Station
Marqua Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated about south of Alpurrurulam and north east of Alice Springs. The property shares a boundary with Tarlton Downs to the west, Manners Creek Station to the north, Tobermorey to the east and the Atnetye Aboriginal Land Trust to the south. Marqua Creek, from which the station takes its name, flows through the property at the south eastern end. The property is very close to the Plenty Highway, which almost intersects the north west corner. In June 2011 the property was sold for 7.22 million on a walk-in walk-out basis. The property had been acquired by John and Mary Atkins, who also own Spion Kop Station near Taroom in Queensland, who were breeding cattle at Marqua then trucking them to Spion Kop. A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Alpurrurulam, from the original Aboriginal name ''Ilperrelhelame'', also known as Lake Nash, is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the territory's east about south-east of the territory capital of Darwin and about east of the municipal seat of Tennant Creek and about from the border with the state of Queensland. The Plenty Highway is a outback mostly unsealed road in the Northern Territory of Australia between the Stuart Highway and north-western Queensland. Route description The road begins at a turnoff from the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs, and finishes at Tobermorey Homestead on the Northern Territory/Queensland border. Taroom is a town in the Shire of Banana and locality split between the Shire of Banana and the Western Downs Region in Queensland, Australia. At the , Taroom had a population of 869 people. Geography The town is located on the Dawson River and the Leichhardt Highway, north west of the state capital, Brisbane, from Rockhampton and from Toowoomba. History Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt passed through the district in 1844, carving his initials and date on a coolibah tree that now stands in the centre of town. Leichhardt's carving is no longer visible following an alleged attempt to remove bark growing over the initials that removed the initials as well.
