The Marnix, het Rotterdamse Gymnasium is a school located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The school is named after Philips of Marnix, lord of Saint-Aldegonde. It teaches secondary education in the Netherlands and prepares students for a tertiary education at Dutch universities. History The school was founded in 1903. Its naming after the Calvinist Philips of Marnix was done out of deliberate jealousy of the name of the Gymnasium Erasmianum, which is named after the far more famous humanist Desiderius Erasmus. After the Second World War the then deputy head of the school, Jan Karsemeijer, had to go into hiding from the authorities. HMS ''Garland'', also known by her Polish designation ORP ''Garland'', was a G-class destroyer built for the Royal Navy in the mid-1930s. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 the ship spent considerable time in Spanish waters, enforcing the arms blockade imposed by Britain and France on both sides of the conflict. Shortly after World War II began, she was badly damaged by the premature explosion of her own depth charges and required over six months of repairs. Before these were completed, ''Garland'' was loaned to the Polish Navy in May 1940. Bornem Castle, also known as the Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde Castle ( nl, Kasteel van Bornem, or ''Kasteel Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde''), is a country house, formerly a castle, located in Bornem, province of Antwerp, Belgium. Bornem Castle is situated at an elevation of 1 meters. History The building stands on the Oude Schelde, a tributary of the Scheldt. The earliest fortification on the site was of the 10th or 11th centuries and was intended to defend against the incursions of the Vikings. A manor house was built on the foundations of the older building in 1587 by the Spanish nobleman Pedro Coloma, Baron of Bornhem and lord of Bobadilla, a follower of Alexander Farnese. Marnix Vincent (1936–2016) was a Belgian literary translator, primarily translating Dutch into French. Life Vincent was born in Oudenaarde on December 25, 1936. He studied romance languages at the University of Ghent, and went on to teach at the Institut libre Marie Haps. In 2005, he was awarded the Flemish Community's triennial prize for the translation of Dutch literature. He died in Aalst on April 6, 2016. Marnix Smit (born 10 December 1975) is a Dutch former footballer who played as a centre back. He spent all of his professional career, which lasted ten years, with Heracles Almelo. Playing career Smit was born in Almelo and played youth football for SV Rietvogels and FC Twente. In January 1999, while playing for the reserve team of FC Twente, he was approached by Eerste Divisie side Heracles Almelo, who were looking to give the club a more regional image with players who were from the area.
