Markus Schinwald
Markus Schinwald (born 1973) is an Austrian visual artist. He lives and works in Vienna, Austria, and New York. Since 2021, Schinwald is professor at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Karlsruhe. Previously, he taught phenomenology at Yale University. Work Occupied space and the body in its cultural context are central to Schinwald's works as foundational elements for transformation and manipulation. He has worked in a variety of media: painting, sculpture, film, performance, and large, site-specific installations. His work "is centered on the body as a cultural construct, as an incessantly actualized site at which the subject is constituted both in its identity and its instability and transversality. He is not true to one medium, but rather nomadic as he appropriates methods and/or devices from cultural theory, film, and poetry, among others. Performa is a non-profit arts organization well-known for the Performa Biennial, a festival of performance art that happens every two year in various venues and institutions in New York City. Performa was founded in 2004 by art historian and curator RoseLee Goldberg. Nicolaus Schafhausen (born 1965) is a German curator, director, author, and editor of numerous publications on contemporary art. Since 2012 he has been the Strategic Director of Fogo Island Arts, an initiative of the Canadian Shorefast Foundation to find alternative solutions for the revitalization of the area that is prone to emigration. Schafhausen is also a Visiting Lecturer at HISK, Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Gent. Schafhausen co-curated the 6th Moscow Biennale in 2015.
