Joseph Zalman Margolis (May 16, 1924 – June 8, 2021) was an American philosopher. A radical historicist, he authored many books critical of the central assumptions of Western philosophy, and elaborated a robust form of relativism. His philosophical affinities included Protagoras, Hegel, C. S. Peirce, Dewey, Wittgenstein, W.V. Quine, and Foucault. Biography Joseph Margolis was the son of Jewish immigrants from central Europe. Rachel Margolis (28 October 1921 – 6 July 2015) was a Holocaust survivor, partisan, biologist and Holocaust historian. Background Margolis was born in Vilnius, Lithuania in 1921. In 1941, when the Nazis occupied Lithuania, Margolis was sent to live with a Christian family. Of Jewish birth, she instead decided to voluntarily enter the Jewish Vilna ghetto in September 1942. She entered the resistance movement there and became active in the underground. Leo Margolis, (December 18, 1927 – January 13, 1997) was a Canadian parasitologist. He was a pioneer in the use of parasites for identification of Pacific Ocean fish stocks. His discoveries became a crucial point in negotiations over pacific salmon fisheries, as it could now be determined where each individual fish spawned, in the rivers of Canada or the United States. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he received a B.Sc. in 1948, a M.Sc. in 1950, and a Ph.D in 1952 from McGill University. He joined the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia, where was a government scientist, advisor, and diplomatic representative. He became Head of the Fish Health and Parasitology Section of the Station in 1967 and was appointed Senior Scientist in 1990. Gwen Margolis (née Liedman; October 4, 1934 – June 9, 2020) was a Democratic politician from Florida. She served three different times in the Florida Senate: from 1980 to 1992, 2002 to 2008, and 2010 to 2016.
