Marek Huberath
Marek S. Huberath (pen name, born 1954) is a Polish professor of physics in the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and an award-winning science fiction and fantasy writer. His themes are philosophical, moral, and religious: how people become beasts or remain human in extreme circumstances. Many of his stories focus on death. Winner of the Zajdel Award in 1991 for a short story ''Kara większa'' and in 1997 for his novel ''Gniazdo Światów''. Michael Kandel (born December 24, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American translator and author of science fiction. Biography Kandel received a doctorate in Slavistics from Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University. His most recent position was editor at the Modern Language Association. ''Nest of Worlds'' (Polish: ''Gniazdo światów'') is a 1998 science fiction novel by the Polish author Marek S. Huberath. The novel has layers of nested stories, each of which is printed in a different font. This, along with its theme of books and reading, places it in the genre of metafiction. It was translated into English by Michael Kandel in 2014. Setting ''Nest of Worlds'' is set in a universe which resembles the real world, but with different physical laws and social organisation. Physics In the main story, the flow of time depends on the distance of a given person or object from the planet. The further a body is from the surface, the slower time flows for that body. For example, at the beginning of the novel, two of the main characters, Dave and Magda, make a journey covering the same distance. Dave travels by plane, while Magda travels by ship. The Janusz A. Zajdel Award (''Nagroda imienia Janusza A. Zajdla''), often called just Zajdel, is the annual award given by the Polish science fiction and fantasy fandom for the best stories published in the previous year. The winners are chosen in a vote by fans present at the Polcon convention from up to five nominations in each of two categories: *Novel: works longer than 100 standard pages (of 1800 characters), *Short story: shorter works. Instant-runoff voting with "No award" as one of the choices is the method used. Vote counts are not announced.
