Marcel Mauri
Marcel Mauri de los Rios (born 1977 in Badalona, Spain) is a journalist and historian who is currently the vice president and spokesman of Òmnium Cultural. Biography Mauri was born in 1977 in Badalona. As a teenager, he studied in the Escola Jungfrau and in the Institut La Llauna in Badalona. He has been involved in activism since then. First, as a member of the esplai, then, already in the university, as a member of the Bloc d’Estudiants Independentistes (BEI) and the Coordinadora d’Estudiants dels Països Catalans (CEPC). Academic and professional career He is Professor of Journalism and Journalistic Ethics of the Communications Department at Pompeu Fabra University. Wake Up Europe!
Wake Up Europe! ( ca, Europa, desperta't!) is a gathering in Brussels on 7 December 2017 in support of Catalan independence. It was organized by the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), the main civil society organisations behind the massive pro-independence demonstrations held since 2012, and Òmnium Cultural. The number of participants that took part in the demonstration was 45,000 according to the Police Bruxelles Capitale Ixelles. The demonstration followed similar protests in 2012, the Catalan Way (2013), the Catalan Way 2014, the Free Way to the Catalan Republic (2015), Go ahead, Catalan Republic (2016) and National Day for Yes (2017). Representatives from a pro-independence pressure group handed over a petition with 25,000 signatures to the European Parliament. Ã’mnium Cultural
Òmnium Cultural () is a Catalan association based in Barcelona, Catalonia. It was originally created in the 1960s to promote the Catalan language and spread Catalan culture. Over the years it has increased its involvement in broader political issues; in 2012 it committed itself to Catalan independence, specifically demanding the right of self-determination for Catalonia. Leaders of the abortive Catalan independence referendum such as Jordi Cuixart were simultaneously holding leadership positions at Òmnium. Currently Òmnium claims more than 190,000 members organised in 52 regional offices besides the headquarters in Barcelona. Jordi Cuixart
Jordi Cuixart i Navarro (born 22 April 1975) is a Spanish businessman and cultural activist from Catalonia. He was the president of Òmnium Cultural, a non-profit cultural organisation founded in 1961 with more than 190,000 members and 52 local branches in Catalonia, from December 2015 to February 2022. As part of his role in the pro-independence demonstrations prior to the Catalan independence referendum of 2017, he was imprisoned from October 2017 until June 2021 under charge of sedition brought by the Spanish prosecutor's office. In October 2019, after two years of pre-trial detention, Cuixart was sentenced to nine years of prison for sedition. Amnesty International believes his detention and sentence constituted a disproportionate restriction on his rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, and urged Spain to free him.
