Nicholas Macdonald
Nicholas Gardiner Macdonald (born October 22, 1944) is an American author and filmmaker (as Nick Macdonald) who made several independent films during the 1970s, including ''Break Out!'' (1971) and ''The Liberal War'' (1974). His book ''In Search of «La Grande Illusion»: a Critical Appreciation of Jean Renoir's Elusive Masterpiece'' was published in November 2013. Macdonald's anti-Vietnam War film, ''The Liberal War,'' is set in a utopian, anarchist future, looking back critically on the John F. Kennedy administration's prosecution of the war in Vietnam. Contrary to the belief held by many that JFK intended to decrease American military involvement in Southeast Asia at the time of his assassination, ''The Liberal War'' argues that he had every intention of continuing his expansion of the conflict in Vietnam. ''The Liberal War'' was acquired for the Study Collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1976. His films have been shown in New York City at Film Forum, Museum of Mod ...

Hangman's Noose
The hangman's knot or hangman's noose (also known as a collar during the Elizabethan era) is a knot most often associated with its use in hanging a person. For a hanging, the knot of the rope is typically placed under or just behind the left ear, although the most effective position is just ahead of the ear, beneath the angle of the left lower jaw. The pull on the knot at the end of the drop levers the jaw and head violently up and to the right, which combines with the jerk of the rope becoming taut to cervical fracture, wrench the upper neck vertebrae apart. This produces very rapid death, whereas the traditional position beneath the ear was intended to result in the mass of the knot crushing closed (occluding) neck arteries, causing cessation of brain circulation. The knot is non-jamming but tends to resist attempts to loosen it. Number of coils Surviving nooses in the United Kingdom show simple slipknots that were superseded in the late 19th century with a metal eye splice ...
