Marc Spitzer
Marc Spitzer (born September 12, 1957) is a former member of the Arizona State Senate. He served in the Senate from January 1993 through January 2001, representing district 18. The amendment to the Arizona Constitution which limited politicians to serving four consecutive terms in either house was passed in 1992, preventing Spitzer from running again in November 2000. In 2000, Spitzer was elected to the Arizona Corporation Commission, where he served from January 2001 to July 2006. Nominated by President G.W. Bush in June 2006 and confirmed by unanimous vote of the US Senate on July 14, 2006, Spitzer also served as Commissioner for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission from July 21, 2006 – December 14, 2011. Arizona's 18th Legislative District
Arizona's 18th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of a section of Pima County. As of 2023, there are 65 precincts in the district, all in Pima, with a total registered voter population of 162,116. The district has an overall population of 243,411. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. According to the AIRC, the district is outside of competitive range and considered leaning Democratic. The Arizona Corporation Commission is the Public Utilities Commission of the State of Arizona, established by Article 15 of the Arizona Constitution. Arizona is one of only fourteen states with elected commissioners. The Arizona Constitution explicitly calls for an elected commission, as opposed to a governor-appointed commission, which is the standard in most states, because its drafters feared that governors would appoint industry-friendly officials. They are directly elected statewide and serve staggered four-year terms. Due to its separation from the executive branch, the commission is often referred to as the "fourth branch of government." The Arizona State Senate is part of the Arizona Legislature, the state legislature of the US state of Arizona. The Senate consists of 30 members each representing an average of 219,859 constituents (2009 figures). Members serve two-year terms with term limits that limit Senators to four terms for a total of eight years. Members of the Republican Party are currently the majority in the Senate. There is currently 16 women serving in the Senate after Raquel Terán was appointed, making it the first time a majority of the body was composed of female members. As with the Arizona House of Representatives, members to the Senate are elected from the same legislative districts as House members, however one Senator represents the constituency, while for the House there are two Representatives per district.
