Marc Batta
Marc Batta (born 1 November 1953) is a French former football referee. Football career Born in Marseille, Batta reached FIFA international status in 1990. He was namely in charge of the 1993–94 Coupe de France final, also directing the first leg of the 1996–97 UEFA Cup decisive match between FC Schalke 04 and Inter Milan. In national team competitions, Batta was present at the UEFA Euro 1996 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments, refereeing two games in the latter. During the qualification group match between Germany and Portugal (1-1 draw), with Portugal leading after 71 minutes, Batta controversially sent off Rui Costa while he was being sub off. This directly led to Portugal failing the qualification to the World Cup. 1998 FIFA World Cup
The 1998 FIFA World Cup was the 16th FIFA World Cup, the football world championship for men's national teams. The finals tournament was held in France from 10 June to 12 July 1998. The country was chosen as the host nation by FIFA for the second time in the history of the tournament, defeating Morocco in the bidding process. It was the second time that France staged the competition (the first was in 1938) and the ninth time that it was held in Europe. Spanning 32 days, it is the longest World Cup tournament ever held. Qualification for the finals began in March 1996 and concluded in November 1997. Ryszard Wójcik
Ryszard Wójcik (born 6 June 1956) is a retired Polish football referee who is best known for refereeing a match at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and two at the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship in Portugal. He was born in Opole in 1956 and refereed over 300 matches in the Polish Football League. In 1991, he refereed two matches at the FIFA World Youth Championship - a group stage match between Brazil and the Ivory Coast which ended 2-1 and a further quarter-final in which Portugal defeated Mexico 2-1. In 1998 he was selected to referee in that year's World Cup in France as a UEFA representative. He refereed one match - a group match between the Netherlands and South Korea which the Dutch won 5-0. David Elleray
David Roland Elleray, (born 3 September 1954), is an English former football referee who officiated in the Football League, Premier League and for FIFA. As of September 2021 he held the position of Technical Director at the IFAB. During his career as a prominent referee, Elleray officiated for a number of notable matches, including the FA Cup Final, the highest domestic honour for an English referee. Due to his Oxbridge background and "day job" as a teacher at a public school, Elleray has been described as "schoolmasterly" and "posh" by the press. His teaching role entailed time conflicts with his role as a leading referee before his retirement. He has periodically advised football boards. The 1998 UEFA Super Cup was a football match that was played on 28 August 1998 at Stade Louis II, Monaco, contested between Champions League winners Real Madrid and Cup Winners' Cup holders Chelsea. Neither team had previously won the trophy. Chelsea won the match 1–0 with a late goal from Gus Poyet. This was the first Super Cup to be played as a one-off match at a neutral venue.
