Manuka Gorge
Manuka Creek is a locality in Otago Otago (, ; ) is a regions of New Zealand, region of New Zealand located in the southern half of the South Island and administered by the Otago Regional Council. It has an area of approximately , making it the country's second largest local go ..., New Zealand, on the banks of the Manuka Stream (also often called Manuka Creek), a tributary of the Tokomairiro River. It is located a short distance to the east of State Highway 8. The Manuka Railway Station on the Roxburgh Branch line was located by it. Herbert Deveril and Albert Percy Godber photographed the railway station. The creek was once a busy site for gold mining. Immediately to the north of the settlement, the state highway passes through the Manuka Gorge, a narrow stretch along the upper course of the Manuka Stream. Tokomairiro River
The Tokomairaro River is located in Otago, New Zealand. It flows southeast for some 50 kilometres (30 mi), reaching the Pacific Ocean at Toko Mouth 50 kilometres (30 mi) south of Dunedin. The town of Milton is located on the Tokomairaro's floodplain, close to the junction of its two main branches (which run past the north and south ends of the town). New Zealand State Highway 8
State Highway 8 is one of New Zealand's eight New Zealand state highway network, national highways. It forms an anticlockwise loop through the southern scenic regions of the Mackenzie Basin and Central Otago, starting and terminating in junctions with State Highway 1 (New Zealand), State Highway 1. Distances are measured from north to south. For most of its length SH8 is a two-lane single carriageway, with at-grade intersections and property accesses directly off the road, both in rural and urban areas. Roxburgh Branch
The Roxburgh Branch was a branch line railway built in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island that formed part of the country's national rail network. Originally known as the Lawrence Branch, it was one of the longest construction projects in New Zealand railway history, beginning in the 1870s and not finished until 1928. The full line was closed in 1968. Construction The original reason for the line's construction was to provide better transport access to Lawrence, then known as Tuapeka, the site of New Zealand's first significant discovery of gold. Contracts for construction were let by mid-1873, and work on the line was well under way by the next year, with a junction with the Main South Line established at Clarksville. Herbert Deveril
Albert Edwin Ekins (9 May 1840 – 24 August 1911), known as Herbert Deveril, was a photographer in Australia and New Zealand. Ekins was born on 9 May 1840 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England, the son of George and Elizabeth. He studied photolithography in Southampton before preparing for the priesthood in Belgium. He left the church, changed his name to Herbert Deveril, and in 1864 emigrated to Australia. He worked in a number of photographic studios and as a government photographer in Melbourne, before moving to New Zealand in March 1873 where he worked as a government photographer. He took photographs of sights in New Zealand for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, the first official World's Fair in 1876. His work included photos of Māori, Wairoa Bridge, Rotomahana hot springs, Hot Lake district and Tauranga.
