Manuel Vasques
Manuel Soeiro Vasques (29 July 1926 – 10 July 2003) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a forward. Club career Born in Barreiro, Setúbal District, Vasques joined Sporting CP in 1946, from local club G.D. CUF. During his spell in Lisbon he appeared in 349 games all competitions comprised and scored 225 goals, being part of an attacking line dubbed ''Cinco Violinos'' (Five Violins) that also included Albano, Jesus Correia, Fernando Peyroteo and José Travassos and winning ten major titles, including eight Primeira Liga championships. In the 1950–51 season, Vasques led the scoring charts at 29 goals to help the Lions win the domestic league 11 ahead of second-placed FC Porto. International career Vasques won 26 caps for the Portugal national team over nine years, netting eight times. His debut came on 21 March 1948 in a 3–0 friendly loss against Spain, in Madrid. Barreiro, Portugal
Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 78,764, in an area of 36.39 km2. Barreiro has a view of the city of Lisbon from Avenida da Praia and a riverside area called Alburrica. The mayor since 2017 has been Frederico Rosa, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 28. History There are records of the village of Barreiro from as far as the 13th century, when the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword promoted its settlement. Due to the village's location, the main occupation of the population was harvesting salt and fishing. By the time the Portuguese reached India and Brasil (early 16th century), it was in Barreiro that shipbuilding was concluded, since it started in Lisbon during summer and when the rougher weather arrived the construction had to be moved to somewhere with more sheltered conditions. The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) is an international organization dedicated to collecting statistics about association football. The foundation aims to build an exhaustive archive of football-related information from around the world. History This enterprise, according to its founders, was created in January 1994 by three regulars of the Rec.Sport.Soccer (RSS) Usenet newsgroup: Lars Aarhus, Kent Hedlundh, and Karel Stokkermans. Manuel Esteves Soeiro Vasques (17 March 1909 – February 1977), known as Soeiro, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a striker. Club career Born in Barreiro, Setúbal District, Soeiro signed for Sporting CP in 1933 from local Luso Futebol Clube. During his 12-year spell with the former club, he helped to the conquest of four Taça de Portugal trophies – the competition was known as Campeonato de Portugal until 1938 – and the 1940–41 edition of the Primeira Liga. Additionally, he was the latter tournament's top scorer in 1934–35 and 1936–37. Soeiro appeared in 219 games for Sporting in all competitions, scoring 206 goals. International career Soeiro earned 12 caps for the Portugal national team in nearly nine years.
