Manu is one of the 60 Legislative Assembly constituencies of Tripura state in India. It is in South Tripura district and is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. Tripura Legislative Assembly
The Tripura Legislative Assembly or Tripura Vidhan Sabha is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Tripura, with 60 Members of the Legislative Assembly. The present Assembly is located in Gurkhabasti. Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala served as the previous meeting place. The tenure of the Assembly is five years unless sooner dissolved. Pravat Chowdhury
Pravat Chowdhury (born 28 December 1976) is an Indian politician and member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Chowdhury is a member of the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the Manu (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in South Tripura district since 2014. Chowdhury was elected in a 2014 bye-election to this seat, after the previous incumbent, Jitendra Choudhury, resigned to take his Lok Sabha seat for Tripura East after winning in 2014. Pravat Chowdhury won the bye-election by a landslide, leading by a record margin of nearly 16,000 votes. Chowdhury won reelection to a full term during the 2018 Tripura Legislative Assembly election, but this time by a much smaller margin. His victory by 193 votes, or 0.48%, against Dhananjoy Tripura of the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura was the closest contest in the state. 2018 Tripura Legislative Assembly Election
The 2018 Tripura Legislative Assembly election was held on 18 February for 59 of the state's 60 constituencies. The counting of votes took place on 3 March 2018. With 43.59% of the vote, the BJP secured a majority of seats (36) and subsequently formed the government with Biplab Kumar Deb as Chief Minister. The former governing Left Front alliance while receiving 44.35% of the vote secured only 16 seats. Background The term of the Tripura Legislative Assembly ended on 6 March 2018. Having governed Tripura since the 1998 election, the ruling Left Front alliance, under Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, sought re-election. Scheduled Tribes
The Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are officially designated groups of people and among the most disadvantaged socio-economic groups in India. The terms are recognized in the Constitution of India and the groups are designated in one or other of the categories. A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency, the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Each state has between seven and nine MLAs for every Member of Parliament (MP) that it has in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's bicameral parliament. Jitendra Choudhury
Jitendra Chaudhury (born 27 June 1958) is an Indian communist politician who is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and serving as the incumbent MLA from Sabroom. Previously, he had won the 2014 Indian general elections from the Tripura East (Lok Sabha constituency) before conceding defeat against Rebati Tripura of BJP in 2019. Jitendra Choudhury is the current Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura State Committee. At the 22nd Communist Party Congress in 2018, he was elected as a member of the central committee. He is the national Chairperson of Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM).
