Manoora is a suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Manoora had a population of 6,027 people. Geography Maroora is west of the Cairns city centre in Far North Queensland. It straddles the Cairns Western Arterial Road (state route 91). History Manoora is situated in the Yidinji traditional Aboriginal country. The suburb was established in 1975 from part of Parramatta Park and all of the area known as West Cairns. It was named after HMAS Manoora, which was in turn named after the town of Manoora in South Australia. The ship was built in Scotland in 1935 as a coastal steamer for the Adelaide Steamship Company and regularly visited Cairns, and entered service with the Royal Australian Navy in the World War II. Cairns Western Arterial Road
The Cairns Western Arterial Road is a numbered state route in the Cairns Region of Queensland, Australia. The road provides a primary access route across the Brinsmead Gap for suburbs west of the Whitfield Range, and is one of two major crossings over the Barron River. In 2007, it was estimated that 24,000 vehicles per day used the road. After proceeding north-west for 2.4 km from the Bruce Highway at Bungalow, the dual carriageway road alignment follows Reservoir Road west of a signalised intersection with Pease Street in the suburb of Manoora. A number of suburban streets connect directly to the arterial between here and Enmore Road. West of Enmore Road, the route rises over high terrain. Cairns
Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. The population in June 2019 was 153,952, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia. Darnley Island or ''Erub'' in the native Papuan language, Meriam Mir, is an island formed by volcanic action and situated in the eastern section of the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. It is one of the Torres Strait Islands and is located near the Great Barrier Reef and just south of the Bligh entrance. The town on the island is also called Darnley, but the locality is called Erub Island, both being within the local government area of Torres Strait Island Region. The Adelaide Steamship Company was an Australian shipping company and later a diversified industrial and logistics conglomerate. It was formed by a group of South Australian businessmen in 1875. Manoora, South Australia
Manoora is a settlement in the Mid North region of South Australia on the Barrier Highway and upper reaches of the Gilbert River. It was also on the Peterborough railway line serving Burra until the line was closed. At the 2006 census, Manoora had a population of 277. The first Europeans to settle at Manoora, in about 1841, were the sheep pastoralists Edward and William Peter, of Scottish origin. HMAS ''Manoora'' was an ocean liner that served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during World War II. She was built in Scotland in 1935 for the Cairns to Fremantle coastal passenger run for the Adelaide Steamship Company. She was requisitioned by the RAN for naval service in 1939. ''Manoora'' was initially converted into an armed merchant cruiser (AMC), operating primarily in Australian, New Guinea, and Pacific waters, with deployments to Singapore and the Bay of Bengal.
