Manning's School
Manning's School in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, which started offering classes in 1738, is the oldest continuous operating high school in Jamaica. The school's motto is rendered in latin "''Vita sine litteris mors est "'' its english translation being "Life without learning is death." There is often debate whether Manning's or Wolmer's Trust School for Boys, one of the Wolmer's Schools is the oldest in Jamaica or the oldest continuous operating high school in Jamaica. Thomas Manning (who bequeathed the land and initial funding for Manning's in 1710 ) did so before John Wolmer (who's will at his death, provided for the monies to fund Wolmer's in 1729). Savanna-la-Mar
Savanna-la-Mar (commonly known as Sav-la-Mar, or simply Sav) is the chief town and capital of Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica. A coastal town, it contains an 18th-century fort constructed for colonial defence against pirates in the Caribbean. History Savanna-la-Mar was originally established as a settlement in Spanish Jamaica. In 1780, the town was completely destroyed by a powerful hurricane known as Savanna-la-Mar hurricane. It was rebuilt, as the port was important to the Atlantic slave trade as well as the sugar trade. After Great Britain abolished slavery in 1833 and before the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865, officials of the Caribbean colonies would sometimes order the examination of enslaved people that were held captive on American ships that came to its Caribbean ports. Samuel ''Šəmūʾēl'', Tiberian: ''Šămūʾēl''; ar, شموئيل or صموئيل '; el, Σαμουήλ ''Samouḗl''; la, Samūēl is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David. He is venerated as a prophet in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Storm Saulter
Storm Saulter (born September 21, 1983) is a Jamaican filmmaker and photographer. He wrote and directed the 2010 film ''Better Mus' Come'' and directed the 2018 film ''Sprinter''. In 2020, ''Sprinter'' was released on Netflix. Life and career Saulter was born in Negril, Jamaica, on September 21, 1983. One of his brothers, Astro, is an artist and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was young. Storm attended The Los Angeles Film School and graduated in 2001 with a focus in editing and cinematography. Stephanie Saulter
Stephanie Saulter is a Jamaican scientist and science fiction author. Life and career Born in Jamaica and educated at MIT, Saulter lived in the United States for fifteen years before moving to London where she has lived since 2003. She studied genetics and anthropology as well as later working with marginalised communities and urban regeneration, from Miami to London. Her books deal with these topics as well as including diversity. Saulter came from a mixed race background where one of her brothers has cerebral palsy. Hazel Monteith
Hazel Conupe Monteith, O.D., J.P. ( Williams; 19 June 1917 – 22 May 2012) was an Afro-Jamaican consumer rights advocate, radio personality and social worker. Graduating from the first course in social work offered by the University of the West Indies, Monteith worked for twelve years as a traveling field agent coordinating social welfare projects for the Jamaica Federation of Women. In 1972, she became a regional officer at the Council of Voluntary Social Services and was tasked with creating the Citizen's Advice Bureau. Through innovative programs, she developed training and advice centers and radio broadcasts to help citizens with a wide variety of issues, from how to register vital records, to employment training, to where to obtain assistance for household goods. She was honored as an officer in the Order of Distinction in 1982 and subsequently appointed a Senator from 1986 to 1989. Stephenie Ann McPherson (born 25 November 1988) is a Jamaican track and field athlete, who specializes in the 400 metres. She has won a bronze medal in the event at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, 2013 World Championships, and then placed in the finals of both the Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 2016 Rio Olympics and the Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2020 Tokyo Olympics and all four following World Athletics Championships, World Championships between 2015 and 2022, consecutively. Queen's Counsel
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Marlene Malahoo Forte
Marlene Patricia Malahoo Forte is a Jamaican politician. She currently serves as Jamaica's Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs and was the Attorney General of Jamaica from 7 March 2016 to 10 January 2022. She served as a Senator for the Jamaica Labour Party from 2009 to 2016, and served as State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade from 2009 to 2012. Duwayne Oriel Kerr (born 16 January 1987) is a Jamaican international footballer who plays as a goalkeeper. Career Club Kerr has played club football in Jamaica for Reno and Portmore United. Craig Foster (born 7 September 1991) is a Jamaican international footballer, who plays as a striker, most recently for Santa Tecla. Youth career Foster played in the Dacosta Cup for the Manning's School in Jamaica. Club career In 2010, Foster became a regular for Reno F.C. in the DPL. Haughton Forrest
Haughton Forrest (30 December 1826, Boulogne-sur-Mer – 20 January 1925, Melton Mowbray), sometimes incorrectly referred to as James Haughton Forrest, was an Australian artist who specialized in landscapes and maritime scenes. Biography He was one of ten children born to a military family. His father, Thomas, was an equerry to Queen Victoria.
