Manitoba Lotteries Corporation
The Manitoba Lotteries Corporation (MLC) was a crown corporation that controlled and operated gambling in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It manages two casinos in Winnipeg: McPhillips Station Casino and Club Regent Casino. MLC also operated video lottery terminals, and is responsible for the distribution of all lottery products to a network of retailers in the province. MLC was succeeded by the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation in 2013. The first lottery in Manitoba started in 1970 through special legislation. By 1993, the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation had been established as a crown corporation. The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) is a trade union in Manitoba, Canada. It has over 32,000 members, and is one of the largest unions in Manitoba. The MGEU represents workers from different fields, including the civil service, Crown corporations, and universities and colleges. The MGEU traces its historical roots to the Manitoba Civil Servants’ Association, which was formed around the time of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. The MCSA had drifted apart by the 1930s, and civil servants formed several recreational associations in its place. These groups were united in 1935 as The Provincial Club, which represented its members on employment-related issues. In 1950, it changed its name to the Manitoba Government Employees' Association. The Manitoba Marathon weekend consists of a marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 10 km race, and 2.6 mile fun run. The marathon was first run in the City of Winnipeg in 1979 and has generally been held annually on Father's Day since then. In 2019, about 10,000 runners in total participated over the weekend, including 655 who finished the marathon. The half marathon is also being held as the Canadian Half Marathon Championships from 2019 to 2022. The 2020 in-person edition of the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
