Manischewitz
Manischewitz (; he, מנישביץ) is a brand of kosher products based in the United States, best known for its matzo and kosher wine. Founded in 1888, it became a public corporation in 1923 and remained under family control until January 1991, when it was bought out by a private equity firm. On April 7, 2014, Sankaty Advisors, an arm of the private equity firm Bain Capital, bought the company from a group that included the investment firm Harbinger. It is the world's largest Matzo manufacturer, one of America's largest kosher brands, and the first American exporter of matzo. History The B. Dov Behr Manischewitz
Dov Behr Manischewitz (1856 or 1857 or 1858 in Salantai, Salant – March 8, 1914, in Cincinnati, Ohio), also known as Dov Ber, Dov Baer, Dov Bear, Dave Behr, and David Behr, and born Dov Behr Abramson, was a Lithuanian-American rabbi and businessman, known for his innovations in the manufacture of matzah, and for his creation of Manischewitz, the company bearing his name. Early life Manischewitz was born and raised in Salantai, Salant, and studied under Rabbi Israel Salanter in Klaipėda, Memel, where he trained as a shochet. In 1885, he emigrated to the United States, using the identification documents of a dead man named "Manischewitz". Although he stated that he emigrated because he had been hired as a shochet by the Jewish community of Cincinnati, other reasons have been suggested, including that it was in response to the then-imminent expulsion of Jews from Memel, or that it was in order to avoid compulsory military service. Aron Streit, Inc. (sold under the name Streit's) is a kosher food company founded in Manhattan, New York City, best known for its matzo. It is the only family-owned and operated matzo company in the United States, and distributes matzo in select international markets. It holds about 40 percent of the United States matzo market with its major competitor, New Jersey based Manischewitz. The factory follows strict kosher laws. Only shomer Shabbat ( Sabbath-observing) Jews are allowed to touch the dough. However, once the dough is baked, people of any religion and non-shomer Shabbat Jews are allowed to touch the matzo.
