Manipur Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2021
The Manipur Official Language Act () is an act (document) that declares the official language of the State of Manipur. It was passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly, approved by the Governor of Manipur. It makes Meitei language (officially known as Manipuri language) as the official language of the Government of Manipur. It was initially enacted in 1979 but later amended in 2021, to replace Bengali script's sole usage by the concurrent usage of both Meitei script (officially known as Meetei Mayek) and Bengali script, for writing the Meitei language. Meitei Language
Meitei (; ) also known as Manipuri ), is a Tibeto-Burman language of northeast India. It is the official language and the lingua franca of Manipur and an additional official language in four districts of Assam. It is one of the scheduled languages of India, constitutionally scheduled official languages of the Indian Republic. Meitei is the most widely-spoken Tibeto-Burman languages, Tibeto-Burman language of India and the third most widely spoken language of northeast India after Assamese language, Assamese and Bengali language, Bengali. Languages With Legal Status In India
, 22 languages have been classified as scheduled languages under the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India. There is no national language of India. While the constitution was adopted in 1950, article 343 declared that Hindi would be the official language and English would serve as an additional official language for a period not exceeding 15 years. Article 344(1) defined a set of 14 regional languages which were represented in the Official Languages Commission. The commission was to suggest steps to be taken to progressively promote the use of Hindi as the official language of the country. The Government of Manipur (; /mə.ni.pur lə́i.ŋak/), also known as the State Government of Manipur, or locally as State Government, is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state of Manipur and its 16 districts. MEELAL
Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (), shortly known as the MEELAL (), is a group that works for the development of Meitei language (officially known as Manipuri language) and Meitei script (officially known as Meetei Mayek). It is one of the groups that spearhead the historic Meitei script movement against the Government of Manipur. Standardisation of 27 letter system MEELAL () promotes the usage of 27 letter system of Meitei script, with the following goals: (1) banning all attempts to prevent the use of 27-letter Meetei Mayek script. (2) any organisation found violating the resolutions will be regarded as public enemy.
