Manillaskolan
  ('Manilla School'), before 1879 ('Public Institute for the Deaf and Blind at Manila'), is a Swedish state school for blind, deaf and hard of hearing children, founded by Pär Aron Borg in 1809. Until the autumn term 2013, the school was located at Djurgårdsvägen on Södra Djurgården in Stockholm. Pär Aron Borg
Pär Aron Borg (4 July 1776 – 22 April 1839) was a Swedish language, Swedish educator and a pioneer in the education for the Blindness, blind and deaf. Biography Borg was born in the parish of Avesta in Dalarna, Sweden. After studies at Uppsala University (1796–1798), he became a secretary in the Central Government Office () in Stockholm. After having seen a play where a deaf boy communicated by gestures, he was inspired to create a manual alphabet. He began to educate deaf and blind students regularly in 1808. Following the example of''Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris, l'Abbé de l'Épée'' founded by Charles-Michel de l'Épée in Paris, in 1809 he founded (Public Institute of the Blind and Deaf at Manilla; Manillaskolan). Ossian Edmund Borg
Ossian Edmund Borg (6 August 1812 – 10 April 1892) was a Swedish teacher of the deaf and head of the Manillaskolan school for the deaf. He was the son of Pär Aron Borg, pioneer of deaf schooling in Sweden. Life and work Borg was born 6 August 1812 in Hedvig Eleonora Parish, Stockholm, Sweden, to Pär Aron Borg, three years after his father founded (Manillaskolan), the first school for the deaf in Sweden. Borg began his studies in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1832; he had decided on the medical field and was ready to take his bachelor's degree in medicine when his studies were interrupted due to the death of his father in 1839. Campus Konradsberg
Campus Konradsberg is a campus located by Rålambsvägen on Kungsholmen in the district Marieberg in Stockholm. The buildings on Campus Konradsberg is owned and managed by Skolfastigheter i Stockholm AB. Background Campus Konradsberg is named after the psychiatric hospital Konradsberg which was erected 1855–1871 based on plans by the architect Albert Törnqvist and is thereby the oldest building in the area. Fredhälls folkskola, drawn by Paul Hedqvist, is located to the far left on Campus Konradsberg and was inaugurated in 1938. In the 1950s, additional school buildings were added to the elementary school. Konradsberg was used for psychiatric care until 1995. Plans to demolish the hospital buildings were already made in the 1940s. Carl Oscar Malm
Carl Oscar Malm, also known as C. O. Malm and Carl Oskar Malm (12 February 1826 – 8 June 1863) was Finland's first teacher of the deaf, founder of the first school for the deaf in the country, and the father of Finnish Sign Language. Life Upbringing and education Malm was born on 12 January 1826 in Eura, Finland, to a well-off and educated family. His parents were Anders Gustaf Malm, a military officer and city treasurer, and Katarina Juliana Tandefelt. Malm was deaf either from birth or a very young age. Tysta Skolan
('The Silent School') was a private school for deaf-mute children founded in 1860 by educator Johanna (Jeanette) Berglind in Stockholm, Sweden. The name refers to the initial teaching method, which was described as the "write-sign method". From 1866 to 1910, the school was located on a property at Norrtullsgatan 51–67 in present-day Vasastan. It was then moved to Lidingö where it initially provided practical and theoretical continuing education for deaf-mute girls before being converted into a vocational school in the 1930s. The school moved back to Stockholm in 1947 where it continued to teach until its closure in 1971. Wahlström & Widstrand is a Swedish book publishing company. Wahlström & Widstrand was established in 1885 by two book sellers in Stockholm, Per Karl Wahlström and Wilhelm Widstrand. Finnish Sign Language () is the sign language most commonly used in Finland. There are 3,000 ''(2012 estimate)'' Finnish deaf who have Finnish Sign Language as a first language. As the Finnish system records users by their written language, not their spoken alone, nearly all deaf people who sign are assigned this way and may be subsumed into the overall Finnish language figures. Historically the aim was oralism, whereby deaf people were taught to speak oral Finnish, even if they could not hear it; thus older people are recorded under these figures. In 2014, only 500 people registered Finnish Sign Language as their first language. A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted neuroprosthesis that provides a person who has moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss with sound perception. With the help of therapy, cochlear implants may allow for improved speech understanding in both quiet and noisy environments.
