Manguinhos, Espírito Santo
Manguinhos is a small village in the municipality of Serra in Espírito Santo, Brazil, technically known as a neighbourhood (''Bairro'' in Portuguese). It is today mainly a residential village, as most people work in the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area. Manguinhos is about 10 km north of Vitória. History The first mention of the area is said to have been made by Augustin Saint-Hilaire around 1818. While on one of his trips he went to Espirito Santo and refers to the ''ponta dos Fachos'', which is the name of a beach in Manguinhos to this day. The locality was founded as a fishing village around 1900. During a number of decades, the fish that was caught off the coast were taken to the capital, Vitória, by canoe, until much later in the middle of the century, when better roads made it possible to transport them in small trucks. Espírito Santo
Espírito Santo (, , ; ) is a state in southeastern Brazil. Its capital is Vitória, and its largest city is Serra. With an extensive coastline, the state hosts some of the country's main ports, and its beaches are significant tourist attractions. The capital, Vitória, is located on an island, which borders the municipalities of Vila Velha, Cariacica and Serra. Greater Vitória
Greater Vitória (''Região Metropolitana da Grande Vitória'') is a metropolitan area in Espírito Santo, Brazil. It is made up of the following municipalities: Cariacica, Fundão, Guarapari, Serra, Vitória, Vila Velha, and Viana and according to IBGE it covers an area of 2,331.01 km2 with 1,627,651 inhabitants (2005). It was established on February 21, 1995, when it was known as the Metropolitan Region of Vitória (RMV, ''Região Metropolitana de Vitória''), and later modified in 1999 and 2001, when it was renamed and it incorporated the municipalities of Guarapari and Fundão respectfully. These seven municipalities are home to almost half of the total population of Espírito Santo (46%) and 57% of the state's urban population. Augustin Saint-Hilaire
Augustin François César Prouvençal de Saint-Hilaire (4 October 17793 September 1853) was French botanist and traveller who was born and died in Orléans, France. A keen observer, he is credited with important discoveries in botany, notably the direction of the radicle in the embryo sac and the double point of attachment of certain ovules. He also described two families, the Paronychiae and the Tamariscinae, as well as many genera and species. Biography He began to publish memoirs on botanical subjects at an early age. Between 1816 and 1822 and again in 1830, he traveled in South America, especially in south and central Brazil, and the results of his study of the rich flora of the regions through which he passed appeared in several books and numerous articles in scientific journals. Moqueca Capixaba
Moqueca ( or depending on the dialect, also spelled muqueca) is a Brazilian seafood stew. Moqueca is typically made with shrimp or fish as a base with tomatoes, onions, garlic, lime and coriander. The name moqueca comes from the term ''mu'keka'' in Kimbundu language (Angola dialect). Moqueca is often served with ''banana da terra'' (plantains) stewed in the same manner as the fish, ''pirão'' (porridge made from cassava flour), and white rice, each in its own clay pan. Moqueca capixaba ''Moqueca capixaba'' is native to the state of Espírito Santo. It is a combination of Brazilian and Portuguese cuisine. It is considered a softer and lighter version of moqueca. Lighter oils, such as extra-virgin olive oil, are used instead of palm oil (as in the Bahian version). Urucum pigment is added, and it is always cooked in a traditional clay pan.
